Miss Lotter's Leaders

Parent Newsletter February 1-February 5

I loved having the kids back in the classroom this week! They have done an amazing job of getting through all of the testing and now it is time to get back into our routines! We had such a great week with some very awesome learning opportunities that you can check out below! Also, please remember to have your child turn in their permission slips for the Valentine's Dance this week, and remind your kids about our Valentine's Day lunch this Friday. Thank you!

Math: In math this week, we are continuing our unit on fractions. Be on the look out for a lot of resources over the quarter to support your child in this area.

Language Arts: We will continue accountability in daily five this week! Each day, the students will track their choices and what they accomplished during each round. Students will have the option to listen to reading, read to someone, read to self, work on words, and work on writing.

-We are focusing on how to determine the main idea of an informational text, as well as, how to effectively summarize a text. Also, how text features help us to comprehend a reading.

In writing, we will be starting a new creative writing narrative unit.

Social Studies: We are going to be starting our unit on significant historical events of North Carolina.

I am so thrilled about the new jobs that the student's got this week. We have had these jobs all year, but it is one of those things that got pushed to the back burner. Now, we are really working on holding each other accountable for how our classroom is run. The kids each have a specific job within their crew. Every day, they complete their jobs and work together to make sure that they are getting it done in the right way. Each Friday, we have crew meetings where the students meet in their crews to discuss the things they are doing well and the things they think will improve the job they are doing. We have only been doing this for one week, but I have seen the students step up in such an amazing way! Our classroom looks better than ever and they are doing a great job working together. I am excited to see how they continue to grow in our community!

We have been so lucky to have incredibly neat learning opportunities this past week! We started the week with an assembly by the Alash Tuvan throat singers. It was a unique experience and I was so proud of how the students respected their culture and talents!

Later in the week, we were honored to have Evan Kafka (Sophie's dad), take time out of his day to teach us about his business. Evan is a photographer who owns his own studio. He has been very successful and has even taken photos for the cover of TIME Magazine! We recently wrapped up our unit on economics which included entrepreneurship. He spoke to the students about his field, how he got started, and what he does day to day. The students got to interview him, and I was very proud of their relevant questions and engaged behavior! Not only did Evan speak to the students about photography, but he let the students take pictures of each other and he took some pictures of our whole class! Below, are some pictures of Evan speaking to the kids, them taking pictures of each other, and some of my favorite poses of the day (The pictures that the student's took of each other will be coming home soon!). I cannot thank Evan enough for coming in and doing this with the kids, and for Christie Kafka (Sophie's mom) for helping him set up and explaining specifics of photography, such as lighting, with the students! We are so lucky to have supportive parents who can take their real world experiences and use them to make our students better learners!

I have attached the link to Evan's website below. If you have never seen some of his work, I highly recommend checking it out. The kids were blown away by it!

Valentine's Dance!

Thursday, Feb. 11th, 3:30-4:30pm

241 Merrimon Avenue

Asheville, NC

I am so excited for the Valentines Dance! I always have the most hilarious time talking to the kids and seeing their signature dance moves! The dance will last from 3:30-4:30. When you pick up your children, we ask that you please stay in your cars in the car line. We will be dismissing from the gym just like we do at the end of the school day. We want to make sure that every student is safe and leaves with the correct person. So, we ask that you please do not walk up to the school, but stay in your car and your child will be brought to you. Thank you in advance!
