Welcome Back TTSD Families
September 15, 2020
SUPERINTENDENT WELCOME BACK MESSAGE: SEPT 15, 2020
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. The first day of school has always been one of my favorite days of the year and this year is no different. It just looks a little… or a lot different. Just when we thought we had identified all the obstacles in front of us as we planned to kick-off this school year, we found ourselves navigating the impacts of the devastating fires across Oregon and beyond. So many of our staff, families, and community members are continuing to manage through unimaginable stress and for some, loss, due to fires and smoke. All of us here at TTSD are holding everyone in our hearts as we walk through an added level of adversity. If you are navigating through difficult times, please reach out to your student’s teacher or principal. We are ready to provide support in any way we can and if we can’t help, we are ready to help connect you to those who might be able to.
Now more than ever the connections we are making -- between our teachers and students, staff and families -- albeit virtually, is much needed and necessary. We made a difficult decision to start school as scheduled, knowing that some of our staff and families were dealing with the evacuation of family members or managing air quality conditions. Our decision, as always, was informed first with students in mind and although there were bumps in the road, what I’m hearing from students and many of you is that we are off to a great start. Parents are excited to get back into a routine for their children, our students are more than ready to reconnect with classmates, and our staff are showing amazing reliance and creativity as they are creating their virtual classrooms.
As we head into the school year, we will continue to monitor state health metrics and communicate out to you regularly both from the district as well as your schools. Please watch for updates related to our planning for Hybrid in-school instruction to include when we might be allowed to bring K-3 graders back into our buildings. Also, high school student athletes -- be sure to get your physicals now and begin looking at registration for your sports. More information will be coming from your schools regarding OSAA Phase 1 approved activities.
In August, we shared information regarding our partnership with the Cities of Tigard and Tualatin, along with Tigard and Tualatin Police Departments to gather community input and review the role of School Resource Officers (SROs) in our schools. There are several ways the community can engage in this process. First, we are asking for feedback through the SRO Insight Survey. The deadline to participate in this survey has been extended through September 18th. Links to this survey, additional information on this process, as well as a survey where you can offer your interest in our review process can be found below. Thank you for your time and feedback as your contributions are very important to this process.
In addition to the above information, today’s newsletter is packed with back-to-school information. You will find links to:
