School Counselor's Corner
Parents,
For the past few weeks I have featured the job of K-12 teaching as a Hoosier Hot Job. This week for our Project Care message we focused on one of the essential job skills of the Teacher, that being Initiative.
Initiative is the power to act or take charge before others do. For example, if your child cleans their room without being asked to do so. That is an example of them taking the initiative to do it. Meaning simply that they did it without having to be asked. Everyday in the classroom teachers take the initiative to be better teachers by learning new technologies, learning new ways to teach, and making lesson plans so that all students,no matter what ability, can learn the same subject areas. They do this for the most part on their own without being told what and how to do it. Students can also start taking initiative in their lives. With school in mind, they can make sure that they are doing the things that they are supposed to be doing without having to be told. In the classroom, cafeteria, and hallways, they can make sure to take the initiative to be quiet on their own. In the morning they can make sure to take the initiative to make it to class on time, with enough time to complete their morning work. When they are having trouble understanding something in the classroom, they should take the initiative to try and figure out on their own and if they can't they should take the initiative to ask for help.
I gave students examples of how they could take the initiative to help out at home by cleaning their room, feeding their pets, and cleaning up after themselves without having to be asked to do so.
This week if you get the opportunity talk to your student about initiative. Give them some examples of ways that you take the initiative to get things accomplished and then help them identify ways at school and at home that they can also do so. When you see examples them taking the initiative, please point it out and praise it as it is a habit that has to be developed.
Until next week......
