A difficult time in America
Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover was born on August 10th, 1847 and died on October 20th, 1964. Herbert Hoover was Americas 31st president and won many different awards. He wanted to help fix the Great Depression by reforming banks to provide mortgage relief, and ease federal money into business investment. In addition to this Hoover started Reconstruction Financial Cooperation to gather federal aid to banks and businesses.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in 1882 and died in 1945. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the president after Herbert Hoover had "quit." FDR created the New Deal. The New Deal made is so that the government was hands on. The New Deal was FDR's plan to fix the Great Depression. In the New Deal there were programs like "Alphabet Soup" that were going to help fix the Great Depression.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insured people's bank deposits. This program made people confident in putting money in the bank. By doing that it helped insure the circulation of wealth.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
The Civilian Conservation Corporation provided jobs to more than 2 million people in the nation. It gave work to unskilled men and young men.
Works Progress Administration (WPA)
The Works Progress Administration employed people like, photographers, artists, actors, and writers. This program employed millions of people and people to do "public work jobs."
Hooverville
A Hooverville is a place/town on the outer part of a city where people live. These people build boxes out of old boxes and boards.
Breadlines and Soup Kitchens
Bread Lines and Soup Kitchens were one of the ways that the government helped the unemployed people. The breadline was a long line to get into the soup kitchen and this provided free food for people.
Dust Bowl and Oakies
During the Great Depression the Dust Bowl was going on. This was time of major drought. During the Dust Bowl an Okie was someone who packed all of their things and headed west.
How did the Great Depression impact America?
The Great Depression impacted America by leaving 12 million people without jobs. Wages were also very low and banks were failing. Much overproduction was happening.
How did FDR seek to use the New Deal to help solve the problems of the Great Depression?
FDR used the New Deal to help solve the problems of the Great Depression by, creating "Alphabet Soup" and employing people. He also helped the unemployed by creating the soup kitchens.
How did the role of government change as a result of the Great Depression?
- More diversity in the government.
- Government played an active role in peoples lives.
- Government went from hands off to hands off.
- Started regulating buisnesses
