Death Penalty
Are you for it or against it ?
Against it
The death penalty is wrong even though you feel like your bringing justice.
4 reasons why im against it
Innocent
There are cases where the wrong person was executed. The case of Ruben Cantu is an example. He was sentenced to death at the age of 17 for Capital Murder. 12 years after his death investigators found that he was unlikely to have done the murder. Cantu's Co-defendant admitted to letting him be falsely accused. He even mentioned that Cantu wasn't even there the night of the murder.
Not enough money
People that are accused that are poor tend to be sentenced to the death penalty more than others because they don't have enough money to buy powerful attorneys for their defense.
Worse punishment
With the death penalty its over in an instant and the criminal is somewhat being let off easy. Being put inside of prison they have to live with the crimes they have committed.
Sympathy
Instead of causing people to look down upon people who are sent the death penalty it actually may have the opposite effect. For example, the Crips gang leader "Tookie" Willams was sent to death row. Instead of showing sympathy for his victims and their family people were showing sympathy for him. There where protest and even a website to try and prevent his death but they didn't succeed.
3 reasons why people are for it
Warning
This provides a warning for those who are going to commit a crime. With the fear of knowing that they could be sentenced to death.
Relief
Though the victim is no longer living it leaves the family and friends with the pain of their loved ones have been killed. With the criminal still living can bring even more pain and with them being gone can bring relief.
Cost a lot
Killing the person would save more money than having a person in jail for life, due to having to pay for food other things to keep them alive. The money used to keep a criminal alive could be used to care for the homeless or feed the starving.
Well actually...
Doesn't make much of a difference
Even though criminals know there is a chance that they could be killed it changes nothing. in 2012 4.8 victims of murder per 100,000 this means that there were about 15,000 people killed still. Some criminals don't care about what is going to happen to them if they get caught. (Not actual chart.)
Hypocritical
It's illegal to commit murder but, its not? They killed someone and from what we see its okay to kill them. It's still an act of murder. the only difference is that death row is with the government.
Cost more
It may seem like it cost less but the trials that the person attends back and forth to decide on whether this person should be sent to death can take years before actually having to be sent to death.
