Learning Pavilion Dedication Friday

Two years ago, Mr. Carter had a vision of creating an additional learning space for SMS students... an outdoor learning space! He wrote and won a Lowe's Education grant to kickstart what has turned into a massive community project. With donations from area businesses and organizations, we now have a beautiful Learning Pavilion. All SMS students and staff (and parents) are invited to join us for a brief dedication ceremony on Friday, August 17th at 1:30 PM. We'll recognize our sponsors and officially open the pavilion as an official SMS learning space!

Open House Next Week

SMS parents and guardians are invited to join us for Open House on Tuesday, August 21st. We will be holding a free family spaghetti dinner, teacher team meetings, and room touring times. Dinner will be served from 5:00-6:00 PM. Team meetings will be held from 6:00-6:30 with room touring time from 6:30-7:30. Please join us for a good meal, a presentation from your teaching team, and a chance to meet teachers as you tour classrooms! If you have more than one child at SMS, we suggest you attend the meeting of the oldest child and visit all classrooms during the touring time!

Good Sports

Good luck to all of our fall athletes! Cross Country, Boys Tennis, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, 7/8 Football, and 6/7/8 Volleyball are all practicing. The 7/8 cheer tryout is set for August 22 and 23 from 5-7 PM. Students can still join cross country, soccer, or 7/8 football. If you want to play, get info from Mr. Smith.

SMS students are encouraged to attend sporting events to cheer for our teams! All SCSD2 students are admitted free to home SMS volleyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swimming, track, baseball, and softball (adults pay $4 for these SMS events.) Student admission for SMS football is $4. There is no admission for tennis or golf. Adult fans can pay admissions by event or may purchase a Warrior Pass. This pass is a 10-punch card that can be used across SMS sports and seasons (tournaments and football excluded) and is available for $30. SHS also offers family, adult, and student passes. Check out the Get in the Game handout on the SMS website for more pass info. Warrior passes are available at any SMS sport gate.

iPad Distribution Plan

Students will receive iPads later this week. All students will attend a training session on Wednesday, August 15th. Device distribution will occur on Thursday, August 16th. Students will get iPads and chargers as they have classes with Mrs. Burns (IG), Mrs. Copple (TR), Mrs. Zeigenbein (CR), Mrs. Waskom (DT), Ms. Sutton (EX), or Mr. Jeffries (VO). Students will need to pass a responsible use assessment and sign off on a responsible use agreement prior to taking the iPad home.

West Gym Upgrades

The SMS West Gym has had a facelift this summer! We've added a divider curtain, side court volleyball posts, and side court floor markings for VB and BB. This will help us have simultaneous practices for middle school and elementary sports!

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Henry, Mr. Wells, and Mr. Miles for their hard work and to Mr. Smith for his vision. The gym floor will be ready for play in one week. Until then... please keep out!
