Peck's Positive Notes
February 2023
Dear Parents,
Hello! I hope all of you were able to take advantage of the snow day to slow down and enjoy a small break during the week.
Spring Parent Teacher Conference sign-ups are below. Please reserve a time on either Wednesday, March 15, or Thursday, March 16th. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing the fantastic growth your child has made this year!
Thank you to all parent volunteers and parents that were able to join us on Valentine's day. The kiddos loved every bit of the party! Thank you again!
The title of our One School One Book selection was announced at an all-school assembly. Your family is now the proud owner of the book Toys! Amazing Stories Behind Some Great Inventions by Don Wulffson! I have attached the website with more information about the art contest, and writing contest, and includes read-aloud by our amazing Loveland staff.
Remember No school this coming Monday, February 20th.
Reading: February Book Project: Biography/Autobiography. Due February 28th.
QOW: What causes change in a community?
Skills for the week: identifying cause and effect within a text and using text features to understand the text.
Math: This week we have been working on adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Next Thursday we will take our Module 14 assessment and transition to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
Continue encouraging your child to study math facts.
Fun math activities would be using loose change to play cashier with your child and practice counting money.
Writing: You heard it from our City Council members, they voted to build the dam!! What a fantastic turnout at the "Great Debate". Thank you for all your support. The townspeople of Rocksburg had a fantastic time.
This week we will be introducing our new mode of writing, which will be Informational. Authors will be creating a Non-fiction booklet about a Native American tribe of their choice. We will focus on how to research, take strong notes, ask questions during research, and create an informational text with text features.
Science. This week we started our Soils, Rocks, and Landforms unit by investigating soil! We will continue to investigate soil composition and why landforms are different throughout the regions.
Social Studies: Social scientists have been working very hard on a project-based timeline assessment, that will finish next week and transition into the Homestead Act.

Monthly Book Project
Dear Parents,
Welcome back, I am so excited to have your student in our classroom and I can’t wait to get them started reading! I want to encourage a love of reading in their free time, and our hope is that students will find it fun and meaningful. This year I want your child to read books they love from all genres and then share their thoughts and favorite parts in an original way. I have come up with a variety of ways for your child to present and share their books, ways that are both creative and fun! Your child will be required to complete one project each month. I ask that the book your child chooses to read be appropriate for his/her individual reading level and needs approval during the first week a new genre is assigned. The book should NOT be one your child has read before, or one any of your child’s teachers has read aloud to the class. Readers will be able to pick a different activity from the monthly choice board for each genre. With each activity, your reader will also include a Retell of their book. Readers will be given class time to work on their chosen project.
Thank you for your cooperation, we are looking forward to helping your students blossom as readers this year!
The Monthly Book Project due dates are as follows:
Genre Date
Realistic Fiction September 30th
Mystery or Suspense October 28th
Science Fiction or Fantasy December 3
Graphic Novel December 19th
Historical Fiction January 30th
Biography or Autobiography February 28th
Informational March 31st
Poetry April 28th
May Free Choice May 19th
Sincerely,
Mrs. Peck
