Kindergarten Super Readers to the Rescue!
The kindergarten kids completed their reading unit about reading super powers. The readers learned how to activate pointer power, pattern power, picture power, reread power, sound power, snap word power, persistence power, partner power, and book talk power when they are reading their own just right books. To celebrate all this learning and hard work, the kindergarten readers got a super reader cape and mask to help them remember to activate their reading super powers because they are Super Readers!

OFFICE INFO
Cold Weather ...
Cold weather has arrived a little early this year which resulted in a District SNOW DAY in October!! All students go outside for “Fresh Air” each day. They must wear appropriate winter clothing (coat, hat and gloves) if the temperature is 40 degrees or below or they cannot go outside. Also on the snowy days to come students must have proper footwear (boots) to be on the playground. Make sure your student’s name is on all winter clothing so it can be returned to the rightful owner if found in the building. As you know we cannot have a Lost & Found this year therefore any personal items not labeled will be removed from the building.
If You're Absent ...
When your child is absent for an extended period of time, please email your classroom teacher to set up a plan for picking up your child's homework. Keep in mind teachers have 24 hours to get homework organized.
I also want to thank those of you that are emailing us with information about any changes regarding pick up/drop off/early releases/late arrivals, etc. It is also so helpful to receive the emails about absences. My email address is: tlane@d51schools.org. I will continue to forward these emails to additional staff as needed.
TAKE A BITE OUT OF HUNGER
So far our food drive is going very well!!! Our students and staff have all gotten involved and are excited about our progress to date. Tuna Tuesday was a huge success. On Tuesday, December 8th we will be having Tootie Tuesday. Any type of beans (canned/dry) will be 10 points each. Of course, any type of donation can be brought on any day. The drive will end the morning of December 10th. We will then add up our total points and donate all of our contributions. GO NEW EMERSON!!
We Need Your Feedback! Please Respond by Thursday, Dec. 3

Dear Parents: As you may already know, New Emerson pilots numerous school district initiatives and strives to incorporate research-driven teaching and learning practices daily. As part of our current campus study on the most effective ways to provide learning feedback and report learning growth, we are seeking insight from teachers, learners and parents alike as we consider all the ways to monitor and share student learning going forward.
Would you please help us with this endeavor by filling out this short, anonymous digital survey? Just click the link above.
If you are uncomfortable with doing this digital survey, you can fill out the printed survey we sent to your child's teacher for homework folders before the break. If you have any technical difficulties or need further clarification on questions or the process, please contact Jessie Wilbert (jessie.wilbert@d51schools.org) or Michelle Hooker (michelle.hooker@d51schools.org).
The deadline to submit the survey is: Thursday, Dec. 3. We only need one response per family.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful observations and feedback on student growth measures (report cards). We appreciate your honesty and look forward to hearing from our New Emerson parent community.

Hello New Emerson families,
My November class lesson in Kindergarten was about Kindness. I read a story to the students about how empathy and kindness work together – when we consider the feelings of others it often leads to showing kindness. After the story, the students met in small groups for kindness activities – a kind/not kind sorting game and a roll of die finish the sentence game. They also colored Kindness bookmarks.
My 1st grade class lesson was about bullying prevention. We met in a Google Meet to practice a virtual meeting. The students learned about different types of bullying behavior and what they could do to stand up for themselves and others in a bullying situation, and about the importance of telling an adult. They shared their ideas with me about how they can be an “Upstander” in a Flipgrid video.
I am continuing to do small groups in grades 2, 3 and 5 about building resilience. The students in these classroom made choices about strategies that they want to use this year to build their resilience. I am grouping students based on their choices, and supporting them in small group discussions. Hopefully, they will use the strategies they are learning about during difficult or challenging times.
The 4th graders completed another session of Couragion this month. They are completing quests and learning more about STEM careers that are interesting to them. The 4th graders can access Couragion at home and complete more quests that way – accessing it through Classlink.
I hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season!
