The Boulder Valley Rotary Club and Art Cleaners teamed up once again for the 28th annual coat drive collection and distribution. With the help of many community members, nearly 3,000 coats and other winter garments such as sweaters, snowsuits, hats, gloves, scarves, and boots were collected through various Boulder and Broomfield County schools and businesses. These winter garments were cleaned, sorted and distributed earlier this winter to people in need through various charitable organizations.
In addition, the Boulder Valley Rotary Club provides a cash prize to the schools that collect the most coats per student in three categories based on school size:
1st place - $150
2nd place - $100
3rd place - $50
School contest winners are:
Small Schools (less than 350 students)
Jamestown Elementary - 1st place
Nederland Elementary – 2nd place
Jarrow Montessori – 3rd place
Medium Schools (350-550 students)
Douglas Elementary – 1st place
Louisville Elementary – 2nd place
Nevin Platte Middle School – 3rd place
Large Schools (more than 550 students)
Broomfield Heights Middle School – 1st place
Eldorado K-8 – 2nd place
High Peaks BCSIS - 3rd place
Thanks to everyone who helped make this coat drive a success! Without your help, this program would not be possible!
PTA NEWS
Happy 2020 NES families! The NES PTA hopes the year is off to a wonderful start and everyone settled back into your school routines.
Key Dates/Events
NES PTA meeting: January 14, 2020, at 4:30 pm NES library
NED SHRED: 4th & 5th - Jan 28 (Tuesday) and Jan 31 (Friday)
K & 1st - Jan 29 (Wednesday) and Feb 5 (Wednesday)
2nd & 3rd - Jan 30 (Thursday) and Feb 6 (Thursday)
A Plea
If your student is going to NED SHRED and you haven't turned the FULLY completed forms in, please do as soon as possible. There is a lot of data entry to do for the very small volunteer team and time is running short.
If your student is NOT going to NED SHRED, we will miss them. Just drop a quick note to Scott Rainey (email) or leave it in the PTA mailbox (physical) in the NES main office. That way the volunteers won't have to worry about the forms.
If you can volunteer time, especially on the K/1 and 2/3 days, please consider chaperoning.
Easy ways to support the NES PTA
Do you want to help the NES PTA but don't have much time or money to spare? Please consider making the NES PTA the beneficiary of your routine shopping.
The NES PTA benefits from B&F's generosity when you donate your bag credit. Just remember to take your reusable shopping bag.
The NES PTA is part of the King Soopers Community Rewards Program (#KL634). Just set up your account and you are good to go.
The NES PTA also benefits from Amazon Smile (listed as Nederland Elementary PTA).
At ACE you can round up your purchase amount to support charity (rotating groups)
There are many wonderful charities in our area that would benefit from you selecting them as your beneficiary in any one of these programs. Please take the time to select a charity to benefit from your routine shopping. If that charity is the NES PTA, thank you.
Best regards,
Jess McElvain, NES PTA Treasure

January Classroom Lesson:
The focus of December is “academic skills” which include study skills, test-taking strategies, individual effort, hard work, and persistence. Kindergarten, 2nd, and 3rd grade will be learning about growth mindset the power of “yet” (ex: I may not be able to ________ yet, but I can _________ ), and ways to grow your brain. 1st grade will be learning about strategies for improving their focus. 4th and 5th grade will be learning about effective study habits.
Parent Resources:
Upcoming:
I will be starting the next round of small groups in early February. Over the next few weeks, I will be meeting with classroom teachers to discuss students who may benefit. If your child is selected for this round of small groups, I will send home a opt-out form in their Friday folder (please only sign and return if you do not want your child to participate in group). My goal is to meet with as many NES students as possible in order to support their social, emotional, and academic growth. Questions or concerns? Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social-Emotional Learning at NES (Jan 6 -10, 2020)
What do we do with our anger? Most folks feel some level of anger 2 -5 times every day. It is quite normal to get irritated, annoyed, disappointed or frustrated. There is, however, a big difference between the validity and importance of feeling angry and how it gets expressed. Our default reaction to feeling anger is to quickly overreact to the situation~ thereby often hurting others with our words and actions. So adults often demand that defiant, intense children stuff what they are feeling.
This week, students discussed what triggers their anger and looked for other vulnerable emotions hiding under the surface of angry reactions. They practiced new steps for expressing their anger ~
1. When they begin to notice anger in their bodies, use self talk to tell yourself to STOP talking or acting.
2. Take 3 DEEP BREATHS to begin to lower the intensity of the emotion.
3. Take a break or WALK AWAY from what is triggering the anger.
4. Select an active, healthy way to MOVE the extra energy and RELIEVE the tension from the rush of adrenaline & cortisol in the body. (i.e. ask your child to demo turning "Rocks into Socks".)
5. Formulate an ASSERTIVE I-MESSAGE to share. Encourage your child to name their emotions and unmet needs. "I feel ____ when____ because I need_____." Read more at: Responding to an Angry Child ~Ann Sherman, Social Emotional Learning at NES, Parenting Matters Coordinator TEENS, Inc
