Chemistry-8,p,1- 8-Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container.
Physical and Chemical Change-Physical does not form a new substance. Chemical is when one or more substances are changed into new substances that have new and different properties.
Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures-Elements are the building blocks of matter made of atoms. A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements chemically combine. A mixture is the combination of two or more different substances that are mixed but not combined.
Periodic Table - It is a table of the chemical elements arranged in order of atomic order.
*Groups and Periods- groups are the what they call the vertical row on the periodic table. Periods are what they call the horizontal rows on the periodic table.
*Metals-are on the left these are the most reactive metals.
* Non-Metals-are on the right of the table these are the least reactive.
*Metalloids- they are in the middle these change from metallic to non metallic.
*Atomic Number-The number in which the periodic table is organized.
*Atomic Mass-the sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
*Protons-same as atomic #
*Neutrons- the atomic # minus the atomic mass.
*Electrons-same as the atomic #
Law of Conservation of Mass- when mass cannot be either created or destroyed onle changed from state to state.
Vocabulary-
Earth history
Index Fossils-a fossil that is found in only one of the rock layers
Ice Cores-An ice core is what is typically removed from the ice underground which tells us the climate.
Geologic Time Scale-It is used by geologists and other Earth scientists to describe the timing and relationships between events that have occurred throughout Earth's history.
Relative and Absolute Dating- Absolute dating is the process of determining an approximate computed age in geology.Relative dating is the science of determining the relative order of past events.
Half-Life/Radioactive Decay-the time it takes for 1/2 of the isotopes to decay
Vocab-geology-the study of solid earth
index fossil-a fossil that is found in the rock layers of only geologic age
absolute dating- the process of determining an approximate computed age
ice core-they tell us the climate
relative dating- any method of determining whether an event or object is older or younger than other events or objects
Infectious disease
Virus-
Bacteria-microorganism made up of a single cell that has no distinct nucleus.
Fungi-A fungus is any member of a large group of Eukaryota organism that includes microorganisms such yeasts and molds
Parasite-an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species known an the host from the body of which it obtains nutriment.
Epidemic vs. Pandemic-epidemic is a outbreak of a disease within a small population.pandemic is an outbreak of a disease in a large population.
Prevention/Treatment-to prevent a disease you need a vaccination to treat a disease you need antibiotics
Biotechnology-it is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make useful products
Careers-validation specialist
Agriculture-the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops.
Medicine-the science or practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease
Economy-the wealth and resources of a country or region
