Salem Spotlight
April 2019
Our Mission
At Salem, we realize all children are individuals, and this may be their first experience in social living. Our desired goal in working with all children is growth.
We strive to create a stimulating environment for each child that will promote and foster his/her interests and curiosity, thus promoting optimal learning. This learning will incorporate the development of academic, relationship, and citizenship skills, a requirement for functioning in our society as productive citizens.
Principal's Message
Would you like to spend more time with your youngster, build their reading skills, and help them learn to love books? You can do all three when you read aloud. Here are a few suggestions.
1. Read regularly- Try to read to your child every day. You might aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day. Bring along a book, and read to them during a sibling’s sport’s practice. Or curl up together with a book when you get home from work.
2. Take turns choosing books- Your child may want to hear old favorites repeatedly. Use your turn for new titles and variety, such as nonfiction or poetry.
3. Let them participate- Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. In addition, they can finish sentences that rhyme or fill in words they know. Go slowly so they have time to understand the story and look at the illustrations. Kids enjoy read aloud time more if they play an active role.
4. Be playful- You can use different voices for different characters, or substitute your child’s name for the main character’s name, and use family members’ names for other characters.
You do not have to be an expert reader. Your child will love it when you read aloud because it is you.Happy Spring,
Mrs. Smith

School Fees
School fees are collected for each student in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade.
The fee is $47.00 per student in Grades 1-4 and $27.00 per student in Kindergarten. The fee is required of all students regardless of when they enroll during the school year and is non-refundable.
Textbooks are purchased by the Board of Education and loaned to students for their use. Fines will be charged to students who lose their textbooks or return their textbooks in a damaged condition.
All library books must be returned and library fines paid before the final report card will be sent home.
Report cards will be withheld at the end of the year until fees have been paid or an arrangement has been made through the Principal’s Office.
Lost and Found
Many articles are lost at school each year and never claimed by their owners.
To decrease the likelihood of lost items, use permanent ink to label all student items.
Articles found in the building and on the school grounds are placed in the “Lost and Found”.
Articles that cannot be identified or are not claimed, will be given to charitable organizations at the end of the school year.

Summer Learning Loss
Wow! It's hard to believe that the school year is almost over! This is a great time to talk about Summer Learning Loss. Summer Learning Loss is when a child looses academic skills previous gained. It is important for students to maintain their academic gains from the school year over the summer.
What Can you Do to Help your child?
1. Talk to your child's teacher to see where they are at academically.
2. Work on specific skills your teacher suggest. For kindergarten, this could mean practicing sight words, writing short sentences, writing their letters, counting, practicing addition and subtraction, etc.
3. Make it a priority of yours to have your child do something academically everyday even if it's just ten minutes.
4. As with all grade levels, READ! Taking time to read is very important. For students who are not ready yet, the parent should read to them!
Research shows that:
-
Children who read with their families develop a love of reading that lasts a
lifetime.
-
Children who are confident about reading have a positive attitude toward learning.
Reading enables children to acquire the information and skills they need in life, such as:
-
The relationship between sound and print, and knowledge of printed letters and
words.
-
How books work.
-
Familiarity with a variety of writing styles.
-
Vocabulary development.
-
The difference between written language and everyday conversation.
-
Development of language skills.
-
The ability to learn from others, whether reading fiction or nonfiction.

Special's Spot - Art
by Mrs. Ehlers
It's that time of year again!! This year's “Rhythms and Renderings”, Little Miami’s annual fine arts festival, will be open from 9am-4pm on Saturday, May 4th at Little Miami High School. Musical performances will run all day and refreshments will be available.
Our students have worked hard all year creating wonderful art pieces. Hope you will stop by to see the creative work on display and enjoy this community-wide event.
Counselor's Corner
This month, student council focused on the Core Essentials value HOPE, which is believing that something good can come out of something bad. They had a list challenges for their classrooms to be sure everyone is spreading hope. Some of the challenges included: giving a PAX Tootles (compliment) note to a classmate, keep a positive attitude all day long, tell a classmate why you appreciate them, and encourage someone when he or she feels down.
Thank you to the parents and community members who helped at our Career Fair for 3rd and 4th grades on April 18 and Career Day for PK and KG on April 12! Our students are still talking about everything they learned that day. Encouraging students to think about lots of different career options is an important part of their overall career education.
Notes from the Nurses
by Mrs. Knochel & Mrs. Sedlatschek
Warmer weather means more outdoor fun. We expect the children to go outside to run and play each day; however, many children are at risk for injury because of impractical footwear. The best footwear for school is tennis shoes. Please help us keep your children safe on the playground, in gym class, on the bus, and in the school.

Schoology Q&A
Q: How often will my child's teacher add information to Schoology?
A: All teachers at Salem are asked to include at least one Schoology Update per week. Additional updates/materials may be added more frequently depending on the teacher.
Q: Last year I received email notifications when my child's teacher updated information to Schoology. Will I receive notifications this year?
A: Yes! In order to receive notifications to your email or mobile device you will need to adjust your notification preferences under your Account Settings. Please reach out to an administrator if you need assistance with this.
Q: Will I receive any emails from Salem this year, or is all communication strictly through Schoology?
A: Teachers will communicate classroom-specific information through Schoology. Some teachers may choose to communicate via other means (such as Class Dojo), but it is not required. The main office will communicate certain information through Schoology as well. The main office will also send emails for important events (such as party volunteer sign ups, conference invitations, and field day information) throughout the year.
Q: I'm having difficulty logging in on the Schoology App. I was able to use it last year. Why can't I this year?
A: There are several variables that may be the cause of this. You may need to delete and re-install the Schoology App.
Q: Where can I go if I have additional questions about Schoology?
A: Visit the Schoology page on the Little Miami website. You may also contact Mr. Taylor directly.
