Ms. Vanessa's Biweekly Class Update

for the weeks of 2/24/13 & 3/3/13

Updates

Art Room Clean Up, Feb. 26th

Each class is taking turns cleaning the art room. We've been assigned Tuesday, February 26th. It is just general organization and wiping down desks and materials and can happen right after drop off since the art room will be empty. Will you, won't you, please help us? Please let Christina know (czankowski@gmail.com).

Tutors Needed Starting the week of March 3rd

Ms. Vanessa is looking for two parents to help tutor kids weekly. You will help with reading, site word assessments and other needs specific to each child. It will take place from 12:00-1:00pm every Wednesday and Friday. Currently, Christina and Susan will do Wednesdays, so Friday is the main need. The goal is to have tutors on a daily basis during the Noon-12:15 time frame in the near future. Please email Christina (czankowski@gmail.com) if you are interested.

Heads Up! Sight Word Check In..coming soon

How are those sight words going? If you don't already know, you will sure know very soon. Updates on your child's sight word capabilities will be sent to you on an ongoing basis starting the week of March 3rd.

Teach for Understanding (TfU)

Last week, our kids started germinating their own seeds and wrote down their observations in their own plant journal. Next week, they will continue to observe the seeds as they sprout! The field trip on March 7th ties in with the launch of this garden curriculum. See below for more info about the field trip.

Golden Goal

This week's golden goal is: "Do your best in line." Our kids are still working on mastering this one. To do your best in line, you do four things: 1. bubble 2. taco style or duck tail 3. face forward 4. walking feet.

Wanted: Gears, Gears, Gears!, Lakeshore Learning Gift Cards and more!

Ms. Vanessa tested out a gears, gears, gears set on loan from another school. It has been a big hit with the kids and is excellent for fine motor skills development to boot: http://tinyurl.com/aofzcyb. If you are interested in purchasing them for the class, please contact Susan (sdheine@gmail.com).

She can also really use Lakeshore Learning gift cards in any denomination. She'll use these for picking up specific curriculum materials as needed. Lakeshore ships them for free: https://www.lakeshorelearning.com/order/orderGiftCard.jsp

We are looking for book character stuffed animals, such as Curious George, Cat in the Hat and Madeline. If you have any to spare, the kids are in need of some in the library area.

Special thanks to Zoe's family, who already fulfilled the top three items on our class wish list!

Scholastic Book Club Orders Due March 15th

Our class Scholastic page has already earned six new books for the class. For every order you place, our class will receive a free book. Orders for this month are due on March 15th and books will be delivered in approximately 10 days. Our class activation code is: LZ38M. Visit Scholastic here: https://orders.scholastic.com/LZ38M

Events

Field Trip on Thursday, March 7th

Our class will go to the Star Eco Station in Culver City as part of our TfU topic, "We Are Little Scientists." Our kids will take part in an interactive workshop about plants and insects and then have a chance to explore the rest of the station.

The kids will travel via school bus and the trip is from 9a-Noon. Children will be back at school by 12:45pm and eat lunch immediately upon return. Your room parents, Tamara, Susan and Laura are serving as chaperones for this trip.

Laura (Roman) and Tamara (Jaffe) are co-coordinating the field trip if you have any additional questions.

Coffee with the Principal on March 15th

Come and get your daily fix of caffeine and snack on some good stuff. Oh, and chat with the Principal about anything at all. The next one is Friday, March 15th, right after drop off.

Oh YEAH! Parents night out, kids night in, March 16th

On March 16th at 5:00pm, drop your kids off (ages five and up) at the Assistance League and enjoy a night out. A couple of our Teacher's Assistants are babysitting, along with Mr. Shaun. The cost is $30 (it is a mini fundraiser for our school). The time is from 5:00-8:00pm.

Our next Town Hall is March 19th

Details coming soon. Mark your calendars, March 19th, somewhere around 6pm-ish, for another exciting CWC SL gathering at the Assistance League!
