Dear Open High Family,
We are delighted to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15! Open is lucky to have so many countries represented by students including El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Spain. Over the next few weeks, our LatinX Club -- sponsored by Cuban American Spanish teacher Lucy Alfonso -- will be highlighting the many cultures, contributions, and histories of this diverse community. #unidos
It was fantastic to see parents in our building for last week's Back to School Night. This was the first time since the pandemic that we've had such a gathering, and we're gearing up for more events this year. If you were unable to attend, do not hesitate to connect with teachers via email.
A big thank you to everyone who has already joined the '22-'23 PTSA. To sweeten the deal, if you join the PTSA by Friday, September 23rd, you will be entered to win a jar of honey made by our own OHS bees! Membership dues are only $10, but please feel free to give more and remember grandparents and friends can also donate. Click here to join/donate. And speaking of PTSA functions, stay tuned for updates on the Fall Festival happening on October 22nd!
Along with your fabulous School Counselor Micah Davis, we are thrilled to have Brandy Paige, Open's Future Center Navigator, available every Thursday in the Resource Lab to help seniors plan for future goals after graduation. Visit her Google Classroom for scholarship and other important information, and contact her with questions at firstname.lastname@example.org. Seniors should also check out the Senior Wall on the first floor hallway for college info, including upcoming college visits: UVA on Sept 28 and Randolph College on Sept 30.
Our first Town Meeting of the school year will be held at the Richmond Public Library, 101 E Franklin St from 2:30-3:30. We'll share Thursday Electives which begin next week, on Sept 29! Students will walk over and be dismissed from the Library.
An AP Kick-off Event will take place on Saturday, September 24 for all AP students, 8:30-12:30 at Franklin Military Academy. This will be an event to remember!
Check out other info previously shared below and have a wonderful week!

Mask Wearing and COVID-19
All adults (including partners, contractors, families, and volunteers) are required to wear a mask at all times when indoors in RPS buildings. Students are required to wear a mask at all times within RPS buildings unless their parent submits a mask opt out request to COVIDrps@rvaschools.net. The opt out request only needs to state the student's name and school. If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please let us know. The isolation period for positive individuals is 5 days (mask wearing and distancing during lunch required on days 6-10). If you have questions about COVID or any health related matter, please contact our School Nurse Molly Rountree at email@example.com.
Our free Breakfast and Lunch are provided by the cafeteria at George Wythe HS. You can check the weekly menus here. Remember, students must notify the office if food has run out so we can make arrangements for another delivery.
VCU Dental Scholars Program Richmond area students in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in exploring a career in dentistry are invited to apply to this program.
