Yanan studied Mass Communication, Video, and Broadcasting and graduated from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. After working for a few years as a media center assistant and as an independent documentary film maker at Fu Jen, Yanan moved to the US for an advanced degree. She studied Computer Art at Savannah College of Art and Design, focusing on 3D art.
Prior to teaching at Leeward Community College, Yanan taught at the Art Institute of Washington for seven years. Yanan also freelances, doing graphic design, web design, social media graphics, and newsletter design work. Yanan also helps fellow Digital Media instructor, Sunny, run their healing company Soul Healing Hawai'i.

Here's a message from Yanan:
"Learning is a life-long process. We can never stop learning as the world is so big and the wisdom of life is so deep. When we sit in a place of discomfort, that just means there are new things we need to learn. And most of the time, we are really learning more about ourselves and about life. Regardless what we do as a job or a profession, being kind to others and ourselves is probably the best standard for any decision that we make."

Counselor and Student Responsibilities
Hope everyone is doing well, just a friendly reminder that the advising process is a partnership and shared responsibility between student and counselor.
Expectations of Students
-Be courteous and plan ahead (schedule
appointments early and cancel or reschedule if
necessary).
-Be an active participant in identifying yourcareer/educational goal(s) and creating an
academic plan.
-Come to appointments prepared with your STAR
academic journey print out, questions, concerns,
or other topics for discussion.
-Be open to recommendations from counselors,
faculty and other mentors.
-Become knowledgeable of campus policies,
procedures, and resources.
-Monitor your academic progress by using
advising tools such as STAR, college websites,
schedule of classes, and the college catalog to
track your progress.
-Read your hawaii.edu email and check your
MyUH portal regularly for announcements and
information.
-Accept final responsibility for all your decisions
and actions.
Expectations of Counselors
-Provide a safe, respectful, and supportive
environment that honors confidentiality for
counseling and advising.
-Listen to your concerns and respect your
individual values and choices.
-Assist you in defining your academic, career,
and personal goals.
-Assist you in outlining an academic/career
plan that supports your goals.
-Assist you in course scheduling, majors and
degree requirements, and transfer options
using advising tools such as STAR, college
websites, etc.
-Assist you in understanding Leeward CC
policies, procedures, processes, and available
resources.
-Empower you to be an independent,
resourceful thinker who will assume
responsibility for your own decisions.
-Refer you to other campus, system and/or
community resources as appropriate.
Graduation Applications:
Please schedule an appointment with me to do a degree/certificate check if you are graduating this Spring 2016 semester. The priority deadline for submitting a graduation application form is March 18 and it is highly recommended that you meet with me prior to submitting the application form.
