LEADERSHIP REVIEW
MARCH 2018 UPDATE
DIRECTION & VISION
SHALOM
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” (Jeremiah 29:7)
March: (Shalom) This month will be dedicated to researching, investing, and partnering with local organizations that push back the darkness in our city/world. Each DG will find their own organization to pair up with. The month will consist of:
- Finding a unique organization that your DG feels a special burden for
- Getting together as a DG and really praying for that organization and the people involved.
- Researching the needs and philosophy of that ministry together
- Participating in several of their events as a DG (pref. including their families as well)
- Each DG will report back to the youth group and compile a list of needs that our youth group can continue to support.

FOOD INSECURITIES: A reminder that a kids issues are always more complex then what it seems.
I sat by a youth an noticed a horrendous smell coming from his backpack... I asked him what was smelling and he told me he had food in there... I laughed (assuming it was school lunch it something gone bad) he laughed and pulled out potatoes and veggies rolled up in a shirt.
I looked at him puzzled and asked why he had veggies in his backpack. And he jokingly said "in case I get hungry duh!" but his face said other wise. His face looked hurt and scared.
Thru out the night I tried to casually get more information out of him... Turns out when he was little like 3 or 4 his mom would go out using drugs for days and he and his siblings would quite literally starve.
Then when they moved into their first foster home they saw a pantry full of food, they went into survival mode and started stealing it and hiding it under their beds. The foster mom not understanding the situation and locked up the food. Which then made the kids more food insecure... This continued from foster home to foster home... He's now 17 and still battles with food insecuritys.
His foster home is awesome and helping him work through things. And we replaced the potatoes in his backpack for some beef jerky and non-parishable items.
Just a reminder if your gut says there's something more to a kids story... There probably is.... And no matter the hard behaviour there's always a reason behind it. ️
NOTE FROM JUSTIN
Leaders, I always want you to remember that it is more than just the event and that there is so much ministry underneath those things. It was about coaching our people through the event. So with Girls Appreciation it was both for the girls about being appreciated and receiving the good gift of the night and for the guys it's about loving on them while we coach them in serving with their hands and hearts. And this is what this whole ministry is about right? It's about walking through life with our students and community while we address heart issues along the way. Looking back, i'm super proud of our youth group, students, and leaders.
BOSTON Recap:
1. My role & my purpose: So as yall already know my role was to be the retreat speaker for 100 or so students and a few leaders. I was tasked with 4 main sessions and 1 workshop. The workshop that they assigned me was actually on “predestination and free will” I preached on the book of Jonah and took a chapter a session. And like i’ve Always tried to do and tried to teach yall...i just took verse by verse and went through the book. I did this just because it allowed the students to see the text for itself and i just simply added some commentary and pastoral notes. My purpose was really to go and be a source for these students and just lay out my heart for them. I wanted to present the gospel as clear as possible but also to really challenge the students to want more, to repent now, and encourage them the way I encourage you. I also wanted to go and observe how this youth group and church does things so that i could bring some of the observations back to you and to put that against how we do things and maybe that could help us and challenge us.
2. Observations: I noticed that a lot of students are extremely similar to ours in our ministry - the joke around, they serve well, they get distracted, and they have a lot of fun. A cool thing was that many of them seemed super interested in learning so when I dove into the book of Jonah they were pretty engaged. I think every time after the message or in their free time they would come up to me and other leaders and follow up on questions that they had. That's a healthy sign of a good youth group. It does take humility to ask questions that they are confused or wrestling through. I did challenge a lot of their older students like their juniors and seniors to really take their role in discipling the other youth (esp. the middle schoolers). Like most youth groups a lot of the seniors just stuck to their own without any kind of burden of responsibility. CBC, may we always be discipling down. While it's good to hang out with our peers and it's good to feel more comfortable with our own grades, it is right and good to disciple down. It's a good uncomfortableness that we always look outside of ourselves
3. Praying: After spending a few days with those students and leaders here's how CBC youth can be praying for them. Like i said before pray for the students to continue to want to learn. Pray that as they learn that it's not just to get a big head but to push them towards loving Jesus and loving others. Pray for the leaders there. They are super involved and super dedicated but there are very few of them. Pray that God sustains their leaders but also continues to bring other ones around them. Pray for Stan and Jen (MS pastor). Jen has been there for about 7 years now and stan has pastored there for a little of a year and half.
