February 2017
A Note from the Principal
As the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots prepare for the big game, our students are working hard to prepare for our upcoming tests. This time of year is what educators affectionately refer to as the testing season. Whether it is Cogat, WIDA, ISTEP and STAR 360 reading or math, our students are working hard to show what they know. Although there is nothing specific you can do to prepare for these tests, know that a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast gets your champion ready each day. All of this while providing an environment full of reading and problem solving, where everyone is excited to learn, makes for a solid playbook, pushing us towards success.
We are Central CHAMPS because of your support.
Please know my door is always open if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Julie Thacker

Plainfield High School Spanish Students
Bundle Up!
Children will be expected to go outdoors for recess when the temperature and wind chill is 20 degrees Fahrenheit and above. Students will not go out if it is raining or sleeting. It also says that if your child must stay indoors because of illness during recess time, we ask that you write a daily note requesting that your child stay inside. Repeated requests for indoor recess will prompt the nurse to require a written statement from the family doctor concerning the request.
This February, the K-Kids of Central Elementary will be helping the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District’s Recycle Heart and Sole shoe recycling program! We hope your family will help us keep shoes out of our landfills, while at the same time help those that are less fortunate. In the past Hendricks County Solid Waste Management has collected as many as 7000 pairs of shoes and they are wanting to collect even more this year!
We are collecting gently used shoes from February 6th to February 10th. There will be a box in each classroom in which students can drop off the pairs of donated shoes. After all shoes are collected, they will be distributed to individuals in need locally and internationally through Changing Footprints http://www.changingfootprints.org/
As an extra incentive to show appreciation for school participation, Hendricks County Solid Waste Mangagement will award prizes! Prizes will be awarded to the classroom that collects the most shoes in each school district.
Please contact Miss Carmichael or Mrs. A. Johnson if you have any questions. Thank you for helping the K-Kids by participating in this great program!

Readathon: A Success!!
Congratulations Readathon Participants! You sure did take a BIG BITE out of reading this year! Participating students read over 108,000 minutes and raised over $7400 that will go back into enhancing the learning environment for our children. We had a great time focusing on reading with this fundraiser with visits from "Sharkie" the Readathon mascot, the pet a shark program with the Newport Aquarium, our shark scene wall of recognition, bookmarks, stickers, and bags of bookworms to help catch sharks while we read.
Prize winners were announced the week of February 6th and posted to the shark scene wall outside the cafeteria. Awards and invitations to the Readathon Celebration for participants were delivered as well. Class award parties for top classes in each grade will be scheduled during the second half of February, so watch out for "Sharkie" to be roaming the halls with "sharkbites" for these occasions.
Congratulations to our overall Readathon results prize winners, Bella Ryan for the most minutes read and Diella Barth for the most funds raised.

Changing the End of the Day Transportation Routine
The following information is simplified from our handbook:
- If your child is to go home a way different than their normal arrangement, you must send in a note to the teacher with instructions as to how the child is to go home.
- Please make these arrangements before school or by 1:00 p.m. at the latest.
- If you call requesting that your child become a car rider, you are required to come into the school office to sign out your child. Your child will be waiting in the office lobby until you sign them out.
- If you call requesting that your child ride a bus home instead of being a car rider, we will need to verify that we are speaking to the child’s parent/guardian
- Finally, please note that e-mail notifications of changes for the end of the day ride home will not be accepted.
Car Riders
- Please do not drop off students before 8:30 a.m. We do not have supervision available.
- Continue to pull all the way around the half-circle. If you need to buckle your children, we ask that you stay in your car until you can pull all the way forward to the spots right before Wabash.
Thank you very much for making this process as smooth as possible!
