Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.

Uses for Symbolism:

Authors use symbolism because it takes a story from being simple without any depth, to having a more complex meaning in the plot and characters. It is important to use symbols that enhance a story's overall theme.

Popular Examples

  • The dove is a symbol of peace
  • Things like a shattered mirror or a black cat symbolize bad luck
  • In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven", the black bird symbolizes death and loss
  • Harry Potter's scar symbolizes his mother's love and his connection with Voldemort

Each table think of one general example of symbolism and one example from some form of literature (a book or movie).
