Flexible Instruction Days

In preparation for inclement weather, LEX is currently planning how our Flexible Instruction Days, or FID Days, will occur. FID Days are days when instruction is provided in a non-traditional manner, such as a snow day. This allows us to not have to make up the weather cancellation. Your child will be receiving a folder that has FID day directions and materials in it. This folder should stay in your child's backpack and only be completed should the district implement a FID day.

Helping Your Child Recognize & Understand Anger

As a parent, you may find calming your angry child can be one of the biggest challenges of parenting. There are many things that make children angry, and children feel anger in different ways- just as adults do. It is important to teach your child that feeling angry at times is normal. Then, teach your child strategies on how to handle anger appropriately. Try some of the following:

  • Model for your child when you are angry. For example, say, "I am feeling angry in my body right now. My heart is beating fast and I feel like a volcano inside. I am going to take some deep breaths to calm down."
  • When you see your child angry, say, "I can see you are angry! Your hands are making a fist and your eyes are big. Try taking some deep breaths to calm down."
  • When you see other kids angry, say, "I see that little girl is angry. I wonder what happened. What do you think might help her to calm her body?"
  • Read books about being angry. Talk with your child about how the character is feeling and what he/she could do to feel better.

Anger is a feeling that all children experience from time to time. The goal should be to try and teach your child useful and acceptable ways to manage feeling angry. The ability to manage anger and solve problems is a life-long skill necessary for children to be happy and healthy.
