Individuality & Conformity
Which is better?
What is individuality?
New ideas are our future just as we at Discovery College are the future. Individuality is important to Discovery College as we are explorers who grow, discover and dream. The reason individuals are important is because they keep society conscious and awake to new thoughts and ideas.
What is Conformity?
The online dictionary definition of conformity is, "Compliance with standards, rules or laws." Conformity is healthy when viewed as oneness or unity. Together when we unite we can create a positive change in our community. "We are only as strong as we are united, As weak as we are divided." - JK Rowling.
Individuality & Conformity
When you conform you choose to be the same, as you make a commitment to change who you are to fit in, to please the group. This strips away ones individuality, and may feel wrong on many levels but, on the other hand, conformity would reduce conflict and crime, as people follow the rules of a community, it can also make things productive where as if everyone had a different idea it would be harder to come up with an agreeable solution.
When combined, individuality and conformity makes a marked impact in bringing about world change. For example, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King were individuals who took a stand for what they believed in, and they were followed by a crowd of people who were inspired by them. Today leaders such as Oprah and Angelina Jolie, are celebrated individuals who communicate meaningful humanitarian messages throughout the world and that is creating world and individual heartfelt change.
