VOLLEYBALL 2017 6A STATE CHAMPS!
The team was honored at a recent all school assembly. On behalf of her team, coach Carol Lambert, thanked everyone who attended the games and supported the team throughout the season. With over 42% of the votes, the SRHS Volleyball Team also was named Team of the Week! Go Hawks!
Note from Mr. Nieslanik
I am thankful for the work that our staff does to ensure that our students are safe, heard and learning.
I am thankful for the students as they come to school and engage in our community. They care deeply about their futures and maneuver through all that it means to be a teenager in today's world.
I am thankful for our parents and community. Our parents support us in our work and ask questions of our actions to ensure that we are always meeting the needs of our students.
But, I am most thankful for my personal family. They allow me to do a job I love, being the Principal of Southridge High School, and are always there no matter what time I walk in the door after a meeting, athletic event, band or choir concert, or theater production.
If you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, or not, I hope you take some time to pause, thank your family and your children, and reflect on all that is good around you.
Until next time,
David
Recent Events
I only bring this up because these events are not who we are, this is not our narrative. We are a safe school that is inclusive and engaged. I refuse to allow a very, very few and one set of events to define our school. We are bigger, and better, than that!
I ask that you help me. We ask all parents to engage in our community and support our work and students. Also, please be wary of rumors, exaggerations and videos on Snapchat, Twitter and other social media apps. If in doubt, ask! I do not mind emails, and I will always respond.
Let me give an example. There was a rumor of a fight on Wednesday, November 10th. In the fishbowl there was a comment that was misconstrued by a student, someone thought they saw a fight, and before we knew it a series of videos was published talking about a fight...and there was no fight. The videos showed a large group of students moving towards the "fight", but what you did not see were the students walking back to their seats and eating their lunch. Do know that we will always communicate to the community when the need arises. As always, please email if you have any fears, concerns or questions.

Days of Understanding
The freshmen class will be in a class assembly during extended 1/2 on Wednesday, November 29th. The theme of this assembly will be building community, inclusiveness and understanding of multiple perspectives.
Sophomores will have an in-depth, three hour workshop on the same themes. Students will not miss any academic time, as teachers are aware of these pull out times and will plan accordingly. One half of the sophomores will participate on November 30th and the other half on December 1st.
If you have any questions, questions, or wish to omit your child from this opportunity please contact Principal Nieslanik at David_nieslanik@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Attendance and the Athlete
The OSAA Winter Sports Season began on Nov. 13. Winter season includes basketball, swimming and wrestling.
Participation in extra curricular activities is highly encouraged. There are many benefits to being on a competitive team, performing in concert or play, and/or joining a club with other students who have similar interests. Extra curricular activities tap into skills learned in the classrooms and develop new skills, build positive relationships and strengthen each student's character.
Every student should be in class, on time, every day. However, athletes have additional attendance requirements per OSAA regulations.
"Each student must attend all practices unless excused by the coach/advisor. In order to participate in practice or a contest, the participant must attend school the full day of such practice or contest. Any exceptions must be cleared through the Athletic Director or an administrator." From the SRHS Student Parent Handbook
To insure each student's attendance is recorded correctly [not only athletes], they must ALWAYS check in/out at the Attendance Desk in the main office. If a parent calls in their student's absence, the student still must pick up the Flight Pass and confirm their arrival/departure time to finalize the excused absence. Absences are not excused if the student does not check in/out.
-An absence WILL NOT be excused after the fact in order to participate in a game/practice.
-Attendance reports are ran daily for the coaches and the athletic director.
If you have questions about a classroom absence, please contact the teacher. If the absence was recorded in error, the teacher will notify the attendance secretary to make the correction.

It's Not Too Early for Inclement Weather
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents and staff via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.
For the latest inclement weather information:
- Log on to the District website and a light blue message banner will be posted on the top of the main page with the status of District operations.

Safe Routes for Walkers/Bikers
On November 5, we set our clocks back an hour, making it darker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians need to be extra alert to see each other in low light situations.
Improving visibility means improving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflective clothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can to do keep themselves safe.
Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walking and biking:
- Wear bright, reflective clothing and shoes when walking or biking.
- Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossing the street.
- Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
- Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop.
- Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popular walking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks.
When more people walk, bike and take the bus, it makes the route to school safer, less congested and more fun for everyone. Thank you for continuing to walk, bike and use the bus. It’s the way to go!
Stay Healthy in the Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. It is hard to stay engaged when you don't feel well, and it is an act of kindness to not share your germs.
The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
FAFSA/ORSAA Competition
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that is prepared annually by prospective college and career school students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.
The ORSAA is an alternative to the FAFSA for undocumented Oregon students, including students who have DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status.
Why every senior should complete a FAFSA or ORSAA:
- FAFSA/ORSAA determines a student's eligibility for federal funds for post high school education.
- Eligibility criteria has changed. Students who might not have qualified in the past could be eligible now.
- Even if a student will not qualify for federal funds, they could be awarded funds from other sources. To have access to these funds, a student must complete a FAFSA/ORSAA.
- Many colleges (or businesses) will award funds to students that have been determined as ineligible for federal funds.
A portion of FAFSA/ORSAA is for the student to complete but a portion is for the parent/guardian. Please ask your senior about this and set aside time to complete the appropriate application. Our goal for this year is 100% completion rate for our Southridge seniors.
Students Sign up for Dual Language Courses
