Back "home" to Pray, Celebrate and Move Together

As we continue to focus on, what CAN we do, it felt AMAZING to back together at our Monday Faith Assembly last week. It has taken us a little while to figure out how we can continue coming together for our assemblies safely, physically-distanced and in cohorts. We were thrilled to be able to begin last Monday with our grade four cohort.

Each week we will take turns with a different class cohort, physically distanced and gathered in circle to pray, move and celebrate together. At the assembly, I asked our grade fours how they felt to be back and they expressed that it felt, "Amazing, Joyful, Awesome, and "like we were back home again". It is these little things that make big differences and continue to foster resiliency in our students and staff.

Mrs. Lisa Morin-Grade Two Teacher

Hello St. John XXIII family! I am so excited to be back at school and teaching grade 2 once again. I have been a part of the St. John staff for many years and consider this to be one of the happiest places to be. Where else can we pray together, read together, be creative, learn about numbers, move, laugh, and even share our artistic talents? I love teaching for all of these reasons and many more. My husband, Tim and I have raised 2 great kids who are now grown up and living in homes of their own.

Some things that bring Mrs. L. Morin joy are: spending time with my family, especially at our cabin. Fall is one of my favourite seasons there!

Mrs. Cindy Latreille-Educational Assistant

Hello my friends, I am Cynthia (Cindy) Latreille. I am excited to be back working at St John again. I have been working for about 13 years with EICS as an educational assistant. I have my Early Childhood Diploma and many other online courses as I love to keep on learning. I have 2 children, Shae-Lynn, who is 22 and Travis, who is 19 years old. They both went to school here at St John XXIII and continued to graduate with EICS. My husband, Denis and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this week as well.

What brings me Joy? There are so many things that bring me JOY. Laughing and hearing laughter definitely is the top of my list. I am very passionate and see a lot of joy in working with all students, sharing their gifts and celebrating with them. Spending time with family and friends is also so important to me and brings me so much Joy!

Mrs. Yvette Morin-Grade Two Teacher

Hello and blessings to all of our St. John XXIII families. I am so happy to be back in school and teaching grade two children. I love to see my former students and have a conversation with them.

My husband and I have 4 lovely daughters, Janelle, Chantelle, Chelsea and Alyson and two grandchildren, Sheamus 4 and Peyton 6 months. Life brings me many joys; my family, making soups from the garden produce, quiet time in prayer and going to Mass.

Halloween Happenings at St.. John XXIII

At St. John XXIII our staff continue to focus on what we CAN do. Together with our AWESOME SJ parents and staff, we have come up with some creative ways to celebrate Halloween this year! Specific Halloween information will be shared by your child’s teacher but here are a few Halloween happenings...

  • Classroom door decorating contest taking place this week

  • Students and staff come dressed for the day on Friday, October 30th! Typically we change into costumes after lunch. This year, please have children come dressed and ready for the day so parents can assist with any make up or tricky costume pieces at home before school. As per usual, students will be asked to please leave all props or weapons at home.

  • Virtual parade: Mrs. Schaub, Mrs. Boehm and Ms. Astalosch will be coming around each class to video those kids in costumes and will put together a video to share with our STJXXIII community. Just in case you were wondering how you might participate in our annual Halloween parade. :)

  • Halloween Dance Party: So students can see each other and celebrate the spirit, we will head outside for a very short, cohorted, physically distanced “Halloween Dance Party”

  • To adhere to COVID-19 protocols and align with our Nutrition AP, there will be no distribution of shared food, mini treats, or other handing out of small items from classmates...however, we have a plan for each child to receive a little something...

  • Thanks to our SJ Parent School Council and Fort Saskatchewan Eye Care for their generosity in sponsoring the door decorating prizes for each class. Treat bags are being being out together by some of our amazing Parent School council Moms using strict protocols and will arrive for distribution for the recommended 72 hour period.

Thank you parents for your continued support and for helping us infuse JOY for our kids! It's going to be "spooktacular"!

We are in need of new girls' underwear and boys' socks for our just in case accident bins

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!

Scholastic Book Fair November 2 - 6, 2020

Although it will look very different than other years, we are excited to be welcoming the Scholastic Book Fair back to St. John XXIII! The books will be arriving next week and Mrs. Buban will be doing her best to give our St. John XXIII kids a great taste of what is available this year.

Unfortunately we will not be able to shop like in the past - but Scholastic has launched a Virtual Book Fair where parents can do their shopping online and have their items shipped directly to them. Shipping costs will apply on orders under $35 . . . unless you do your shopping on our Virtual Family Night Wednesday, November 4th from 6-8 pm when shipping is free! Please click here for our St. John XXIII Virtual Book Fair Link.

Scholastic has worked very hard to make this experience as exciting as possible. There are some great "book trailers" where you can get a glimpse into the stories, and an easy to navigate link to peruse the great books available this year at our Book Fair.

Every year the Scholastic Book Fair has been a fun and exciting way to help our school library fill our shelves with new books . . . titles our kids can't wait to read! We welcome all of you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair - COVID Style!

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I ARRIVE?: Because of Covid-19 we will be asking that drivers pull up to the side of the trailer and stay in the vehicle we will take the bottles out of your truck or trunk. Once we are done we will step away and wave :) If you would rather take it out of your vehicle please exit your vehicle and let us know and we will remain 6 feet away for your protection.

HOW CAN I HELP: Besides sharing your bottles with us, we are looking for drivers to do collections starting at 10am

People will place their bottles at the edge of their driveways for a fast and easy pick up. Once you have a full load we would unload from the truck or van at the school.

CAN'T MAKE IT BUT HAVE BOTTLES TO DONATE?: If you can't make it during that time but have bottles you can do one of two things:

1. Anytime Sunday before 3 drop off your bottles on the sidewalk of the bus loop.
