Conformity, Family, and Success
1946-1952
In this picture above, a family is depicted buying some sort of carpet at a store while they are all smiling and they appear to be having a great time. This illustrates how advertising in this time period was much different than the advertising we see today. Today, you would not see an ad where a family looks like they're having the time of their life buying a carpet. In this particular time period, it appears that doing things as a family and together was a more central idea in advertising.
In this particular advertisement below a "beautiful" woman is shown smoking a cigarette. Also, below the picture of the woman, it says "The Man Who Knows", which is supposed to show that the man knows that smoking a cigarette is the best choice for a woman, which obviously is not because of the health hazards. Yet, people would still buy these cigarettes despite health concerns because according to this advertisement, "The Man Who Knows" will tell you what to do.
