Learn about what's happening in Classroom 24B
Shadow Lake Bog
We will be visiting the Bog next week on Thursday October 30th. We will eat our lunches in the classroom and then leave at noon and arrive back at the school around 2:00. Permission slips came home today. If you would like to go with us I will need about 4 parents for this trip, please read the chaperone information on the field trip form. .
Harvest Party!
For our classroom Harvest party we celebrate one of our main crops in Washington-the apple! We will be making applesauce on the morning of the 30th. We will then enjoy our applesauce after lunch on the 31st. During that time we will also enjoy writing some silly sentences about apples. Please fill out the form below if you can help out in any way for this event.
Math
This week we will finish up our first round of learning the different multiplication methods. Yesterday I taught them the standard or shortcut method. This is the method that I am sure most of you are familiar with. The kids were quite excited to learn the "shortcut." Today we multiplied 1-digit by 3-digit numbers. We will take the Unit 2a assessment on Thursday and Friday. They continue to be excited about multiplying numbers. A great way for them to practice would be for them to teach you one of the new methods.
Last week I also started to help them understand how to clearly communicate their math thinking. Most of them can do a pretty great job explaining their thinking verbally, but recording their thinking on paper is a little more challenging. This is a goal that I have for them throughout the year.
English/Language Arts
We continue to focus on writing realistic fiction stories. Students are picking new story ideas based on events in their lives. You might ask them what they chose to write about.
Today in reading we discussed non-fiction text features. (see photo) We will be using a non-fiction article to gather more information about the bog. We will also be practicing our non-fiction reading skills by reading for information about animals on the internet.
Zero Hour Classes are starting!
