a closer look at our week

A Snail's Pace

Have you ever wondered why snails leave a slimy trail? Or looked closely at their shells to see the patterns and textures? Or compared a water snail to a land snail? These are just a few of the discoveries we made this week in science by observing, diagramming, and handling snails. Some of the kindergartners even invited a snail to crawl up their arms! Next week...snail race. Which snail has the speed to claim the gold medal? That is, wrapped in lettuce, of course ;)

Adopt a Chicken

We are absolutely loving our little chickens, even though they're not so little anymore! It has been amazing to watch them change before our eyes. We are also so grateful for our new chicken coop, gifted by OPT, so that the chicks can spend time outdoors and the whole school can enjoy them.

As you know, however, we had a record hatching this year - double our usual amount of chicks. Wonderful of course, but they are quickly outgrowing the space. Our coop can handle about three or four grown hens, and sadly, we have to find other homes for the rest of our sweet birds. There are a couple of Evergreen families interested in adopting, but we still have quite a few more available. As far as we can tell, we have Austra Whites, White Rocks, and Brown Leghorns. It is still a bit early to know for sure which are male and female, but they are certainly all well-loved chickens. Please let us know if you or a friend are interested in adopting any of our chicks. Thank you!

Zoo Notes

This Friday, all the kindergartners will be heading to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. We will be leaving at 8:30 and returning at 3:00. Thank you to those who are joining us - this field trip requires many chaperons to be successful. If you are chaperoning, we will send you a separate note this week concerning specifics, such as who is in your group and meeting points and times. Here are some details EVERYONE needs to know:

  • Be at school on time (we will leave at 8:30)
  • Disposable sack lunch only (keep it light, adults will be carrying)
  • Students should wear their World Cup t-shirts
  • Wear good walking shoes and raincoats if necessary
