Sundiata Keita (also known as the "lion prince") was a great warrior-king who conquered Ghana and created the kingdom of Mali. He expanded the territory beyond the realm of Ghana, from the border of the Atlantic Ocean to Timbuktu.
Mansa Musa
Mansa Musa turned Mali into a great empire by mainly focusing on education, art and trade. He helped to spread Islam throughout the empire and brought it to the attention of the world.
Wealth
The kingdom of Mali expanded as more gold mines were discovered. This allowed Mansa Musa to build great mosques and libraries and maintain ongoing trade throughout Africa and other parts of the world.

The Mali Empire is located along several of the main trade routes in Western Africa. Along the routes, merchants traded gold, salt and other valuable items.

This city was one of the major centers of trade throughout Africa. Even today, its markets are popular, and filled with locals and tourists.

Salt has always been an important part of the Mali Empire. Along with gold, it is traded in many continents throughout the world. Salt is common in Mali because of its abundance in oceans (specifically the Atlantic Ocean) surrounding the humongous continent of Africa. Salt is valuable as it is can be used to preserve food.

LIBRARIES
Under Mansa Musa's reign, the Mali Empire built many libraries. During his rule, he collected thousands of books from all around the Muslim world, creating one of the largest collections of written information.
MOSQUES
As Islam spread throughout this western empire, the rulers built many beautiful mosques. Among the most amazing is the Great Mosque, which is made from baked bricks covered with mud, making it one of the largest mud buildings in Africa.
PILGRIMAGE TO MECCA
At one point, Mansa Musa made his famous pilgrimage to Mecca, which included thousands of people, hundreds of camels and many pounds of gold and other valuable goods. As a result, he spread Islam to many areas of Africa, and introduced Mali to the Middle East and Europe.

The Mali Empire is really two Empires in one. The Mali rulers conquered the Ghana Empire of Western Africa, and took over its famous trade routes, while expanding it further east into the center of Africa and west to the Atlantic ocean.
