December 2020 Newsletter
Trimester 2!
It's hard to believe our first trimester is complete. We have an opportunity to discuss your child's progress at our Conferences, December 10th and 11th. The format will be a bit different, through Zoom, but the conferences will be just as meaningful.
Thank you for your generosity during the month of November! We raised $120 for our Veteran charity, the Honor Wellness Center, with our Hat Day. Our Top Turkey Contest was a nail biter to the end, with Mrs. Fairbanks, Mrs. Schipper in the lead. Mrs. Martone rallied to second place in a late surge! Your generous donations raised over $800 for our PTO and goes back to our students through programs.
We wish all of our Families a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!
Best,
Tracy Duenzl, Principal

Snow Days and School Cancellations
· In the event of bad weather, families should watch local news channels and listen to the radio for school delays and closings. You can also visit vernonpublischools.org. Families should also receive a RoboCall from our Superintendent and a text message. If you are not receiving these calls or texts, please let me know as soon as possible.
Is there an alternate to no school for a snow day cancelation?
Yes. Based on the Connecticut State Board for Education meeting on October 7, 2020, the Superintendent of Schools may choose to treat “snow days” as a Remote Learning Day (RLD) or in Vernon, a Virtual Learning Day. The Vernon Public Schools may use this option as a Remote (Virtual) Learning Day instead of a snow day cancelation that would be added as a make-up day in June for the 2020-2021 school year. School days during the year from December to March are more valuable instructional time for reaching and learning than those in June.
Our plan is to use the RLD as an official school day as much as possible, unless there are other factors, like no electrical power in Vernon that would not allow us to use computers or internet at student’s homes. Maximizing student learning for all children is our primary goal. School Administration and Vernon Teachers will use our digital technology platforms to assign academic work during RLD for all students. Students and families should be prepared to access the remote (virtual) learning option with short notice, due to New England weather.
Did you know that LSS raised $204.00 from our Hat Day in November for the Veterans? This money was donated to the Honor Wellness Center in Manchester, CT. GREAT JOB LSS!!!
Biographical Info Change:
By now, you should have received a Student Biographical Information form for your child/children to review and make changes. Please e-mail me to let me know if you have not received this form. This form has important information that should be reviewed and updated.
Photo I.D.
We require a photo I.D. when picking up your child or student. Please be prepared to show it when picking them up.
Lost and Found – please have your child look in our Lost and Found for items that might be missing. It gets really full of beautiful winter coats this time of year!
Have a safe and wonderful Holiday Season
From Mrs. Valentino
Dear LSS Families,
Winter is around the corner! Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the weather each morning. Hats, boots, warm jackets, and gloves are essential for the students to enjoy their time outdoors. I have limited extra coats in my office they can borrow just for a day.
Students will have outdoors recess if temperatures and wind chills are above 26 degrees. Also, in order to keep them hydrated, it is very important to bring a water bottle to school every day and refill it if necessary.
Below is the list of COVID-19 symptoms for which everyone should monitor in their family members:
❑ Fever (100.4° Fahrenheit or higher)
❑ Chills or shaking chills
❑ Uncontrolled new cough (not due to other known cause, such as chronic cough)
❑ Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
❑ New loss of taste or smell
Students showing any of these symptoms should remain home. The doctor’s office should be contacted to report their symptoms and receive medical advice.
For additional information on COVID-19 symptoms, please see:

If you need to report your child absent, please call the Health Office. You can contact me directly at 860-870-6088 during school hours or may leave a voice message.
Please, feel free to contact me with any questions.
Happy Holidays!
