Principal's Message
The month of January sure did fly by! Looking ahead, February will be just as busy. Please review this newsletter for more information on all the upcoming events at Nord.
Our final night of Parent-Teacher Conferences is on Thursday, February 16th from 3:35 - 9:05 pm. Teachers have been contacting families of students for who they feel a conference is necessary. If you have not heard from your child's teacher and you would like a conference, please send them an email.
Thank you as always for your continued support. Please do not hesitate to call the Nord Main Office at 440-988-4441 or to email me if you have any additional questions, comments, or concerns.
Take care,
Mrs. Harigan
Intervention/Enrichment Period
We will begin our next round of either Intervention or Enrichment during I/E period this week. The focus during this round of I/E is primarily Math. However, some students will remain in reading groups to continue advancing those skills as determined by both the winter MAPs and Acadience assessments. Your child will receive a letter during their first I/E class that explains their focus during I/E period for the next eight weeks.
I/E period is an additional 30 minutes of the school day where students will receive targeted intervention or enrichment based on their needs. I/E is not a graded class and is in addition to the instruction they receive in their core classes.
5th Grade CogAT Testing
The CogAT appraises the cognitive development of students from kindergarten through grade 12. The test measures students' learned reasoning abilities. The questions in the CogAT require students to demonstrate their reasoning abilities in each of the three symbol systems most closely related to success in school: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning.
The Amherst Exempted Village School District administers the CogAT each year to students in 2nd and 5th grade as part of the identification process for Gifted and Talented. Results will be shared with families later in the year.
Valentine's Day Parties
Some homeroom teachers are still in need of parent volunteers. Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you are interested in volunteering!
Bookbags and Clear Bags
Students are not permitted to carry bookbags during the school day at Walter G. Nord School. All bags and coats must be stored in lockers upon arrival. Teachers have established locker times for students to gather materials needed for each class throughout the day. We have noticed that students are trying to carry all their materials for the entire day at all times. This is not necessary, as students can go to their locker during the day at times determined by their teachers.
All students received a clear tote bag at the beginning of the year as part of their school fees. Please understand these bags were originally meant to help students carry their Chromebook, not all their books and school supplies for the entire day at once. Your child does not have to use a clear bag to carry their materials and it is not necessary to purchase your child a clear bookbag if their tote bag has now broken due to overuse. If you choose to purchase a clear bag from Amazon or another vendor for your child, that is permitted for the rest of this school year only.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Harigan or your child's homeroom teacher.
