EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of March 12, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend! We had a fantastic end to our week last week when we all found out some great news, Fulton Science Academy is now officially a STEM Certified School!
WHAT IS STEM CERTIFICATION?
AdvancED's STEM Certification provides institutions as well as programs within institutions a research-based framework and criteria for their awareness, continuous improvement and assessment of the quality, rigor and substance of their STEM educational programs. The Standard and Indicators clearly define the qualities and components vital to creating and sustaining superior, student-centered K-12 STEM teaching and learning programs, as well as clear expectations for student outcomes and mastery of 21st century skills.
Through valid and reliable processes, tools and training, AdvancED STEM Certification ensures that even the most effective educators and programs continually assess and improve to meet the needs and demands of the real world.
I am very proud of our students, faculty, staff, and wonderful parents for making this possible!

Middle School Science Olympiad Team Qualifies for National Tournament!
FSA Middle School Science Olympiad students placed second in the Georgia Science Olympiad Tournament held on Saturday at Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs. The team has now qualified to compete in the National Science Olympiad Tournament to be held May 18-19 at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. This is the fourth consecutive year the team has qualified for the National Tournament.
Science Olympiad head coaches Gloria Stathos and Pam Walsh are relieved that their team has qualified for the tournament. “Science Olympiad just gets more and more competitive,” said Mrs. Walsh. “The state tournament used to be a competition among two to three teams. Now, there are about five teams that are vying for National bids.”
“We had some outstanding performances by our students,” she continued. “Sid competed and medaled in six events. I think that is a record for our team.”
“We’re looking forward to taking another team to the National Tournament. It’s an amazing event. Not only is the competition intense, but there are also lots of fun STEM activities as well as the opportunity to meet science students from across the nation,” said Mrs. Stathos. “It takes a lot of effort to earn a National medal, so we’ll be working very hard until then.”

High School Math Olympiad
Each spring semester, the Georgia Tech School of Mathematics hosts the institute's annual High School Mathematics Competition. The competition covers a wide range of high school math topics, including algebra, Euclidean geometry, combinatorics, number theory, and calculus. The GA TECH High School Math Competition consists of an individual round, ciphering round, and a team round. Students qualify to participate at the proof exam based on their performance on individual rounds.
FSA High School Math Team @ GATECH Tournament
Holden W. – 9th grade
Tyler H. – 9th grade
Charlie F. – 10th grade
Brad H. – 10th grade
Our high school math team competed at this prestigious GA TECH high school math tournament on last Saturday March 10th and placed 2nd as a team!! One of our freshman math team students, Holden W. placed 2nd overall individually among best seniors of Georgia!
Mrs. Duzyol said “Our math team loves challenges! Two years ago, we participated at this competition as a middle school team and they were 7th and 8th graders, they did great but we didn't place as a team or individually and only one of our team members, Holden W. (7th grader) qualified to proof round. This past Saturday at this competition, all four members of our team qualified to proof round and our team placed 2nd as a team among all high school teams in Georgia. Our math team students have come such a long way in two years and yet our team consists of only 9th and 10th graders competing against best seniors in GA. I am so proud of them.”
Congratulations to FSA High School Math Team for their wonderful performance! Way to go Math Mustangs!!
FSA Takes 5th Place in k-5 chess team state qualifier; performs very well in k-1 section
Above: [Not Pictured, Siddanth B]
Georgia Chess Association (GCA) held the second of two chess Team State Qualifier Tournaments this past Saturday, March 10, 2018 at North Atlanta High School. The two sections at the Saturday Qualifier were K-1 and K-5. The Top Scoring teams from each section will advance to the chess Team State Championship, March 25, 2018.FSA won 5th place in the K-5 Section, which will most likely qualify them to participate in the Championship Tournament! The kids who participated in K-5 are: Cristopher G., Siddanth B., Satvik R., Dheemant P., Taran S., and Samiksh A.
In the K-1 section, FSA did not have a full team -- the top four player scores (top 5 in other sections) are used to calculate the total team score and FSA only had two students participate in that section. Kai M. and Taylor B. did very well in spite of being short two players.
We are so proud of our chess players! We are awaiting word on which of our section teams will move on to the State Championship tournament. This decision is imminent, so stay tuned! Good luck at the Championship tourney to those who qualify!!

An important message from the nurse about this cold and flu season
LET’S HELP PREVENT COLDS,THE FLU AND OTHER INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES FROM SPREADING THIS WINTER
As the school bell rings and we are headed back to class, the threat of colds, the flu and other infectious illnesses are a major concern, especially since there are confirming reports from the Department of Public Health (DPH) that flu activity is increasing statewide, along with the number of hospitalizations due to flu-related illness. Unfortunately, we had a few students out with the flu just before the snow break.
What can we do to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious illnesses? The first thing is simple...wash your hands frequently! Using hand sanitizer is also an option when soap and running water are not available. However, select a hand sanitizer that is alcohol based (and as with any soap, always supervise its use with small children). Research has shown that frequent hand washing and regular use of hand sanitizers in school settings can reduce absenteeism by as much as 20% (plus) in students and staff, and increased attendance by students and staff translates to improved academic performance!
Also, follow the school's standard procedure for routine cleaning and disinfecting. Flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them.
Here are some additional things you can do to prevent the spread of the flu and other illnesses:
- Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils, or other personal items like towels, combs, brushes.
- Properly dispose of used tissues when coughing and sneezing, and use your elbow, arm or sleeve when coughing or sneezing instead of the hand.
- Wash athletic practice clothing each day,and shower after any contact sports.
- Stay home if you are sick especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are the most severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only when symptoms are improving and when you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hrs.
- Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu.
- Please allow students to watch topics on hand washing and the flu.
-Nurse Vickie
aftercare hours reminder
Parents, please be reminded that After - School Care is provided every day from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for a fee of $15.00 per day or $200.00 for the month. We ask that parents pick up any remaining students by 6:00 pm, and no later, as the school closes at 6:00pm. Sometimes our Academic Teams will stay later, but these students are not considered to be in After-Care. There are also sometimes outside organizations that use our facility for sports events, so it may look like there are still plenty of people here, but these more often than not, do not include aftercare students. Thank you for your understanding.
WT Café: New Hot Lunch Provider for 2nd Semester

Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
