LHS Monday Memo
Week of 10/21/19
Good evening LHS family,
Thanks to all who were able to attend events this past week, we appreciate your time and presence at our special student and family events. As a reminder our staff voice group will be meeting again tomorrow, Monday, right after school in the LT (snacks included), we hope to see you there!
For your awareness, leadership will be attending professional development and out of the building this week, split between Wednesday and Thursday.
Friday is our first of the year schoolhouse breakfast starting at 7:15am in the faculty lounge - be sure to bring your appetite! This is always a wonderful time to meet up with colleagues and start Friday off with a smile (some solid school spirit and jeans)!

Freshman Academy clubs and activities information session on PSAT day
The freshman class met members of the senior class to discuss different clubs and activities offered at the school. The freshmen were able to ask questions and get a better understanding about how different organizations ran. Thank you to all the seniors who participated.
Homecoming 2019
Our Homecoming Game went great with a 28-6 win over our longtime rival Lawrence High School.
Congratulations to our 2019 Homecoming Queen Sabrina Albertorio and Mr. Football Brendan Tighe. The other girls in our Homecoming Court were Shyanne Greene, Keara Page and Erika Pe.
NHS Honor Society Induction
New stipend positions
Morning Safety Monitors (5 teachers)
Come in early, 7:10am-7:40am, Monday through Friday to ensure that all students who arrive early are supervised and remain is designated areas of LHS. Additionally, staff will engage with and get to know these students. Many of our students who arrive early do so because they need to leave their home early for various reasons. Adding purposeful staffing before and after school, serves to extend the school day, increase access to the building and resources, and most importantly offers more of our LHS students a safe, welcoming place with caring and supportive adults. Educational research clearly demonstrates that school connectedness and building positive adult and peer relationships all increase school performance, sense of belonging and positive outlook. This positions will assist with that connectedness.
Raiders on the Move (1-2 teachers)
Facilitate a twice per week year long program, running from 2:45pm-4pm. Raiders on the Move offers non-competitive fitness programming in a fun, low stress, and positive environment. It also provides a social connection for students who
want to move and want to be with other kids like them, who also want to move, exercise and get to know each other in a healthy, positive atmosphere.
Research shows that students who participate in wellness programming are physically, emotionally and psychologically healthier than their peers. While athletics provides ample fitness and competition opportunities, only 52% of LHS students are on a team. There are many more students whose mental and physical health could benefit from wellness programming at Lowell High.
In similar programs at other schools, student participation was highly inclusive and fully accessible to any student who wanted to join. Typically, English Learners, students with disabilities and often many otherwise disengaged or underserved students regularly attended. For many students, this was their first and only school sponsored activity connecting them to their peers and teachers outside of the classroom.
See school stream to apply, stipends will be paid at $30/hour
What the Tech?
Tech Tip from Malinda:
It is important to remember that students cannot access YouTube videos or many other online media resources at school, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them available. Copyright laws allow resources to be shared for educational purposes as long as they are not used publicly or commercially. It is possible to download many types of media and share it using Google Classroom or on the LPSD Video Server. If you would like to learn how: enter a help desk request for Technology Training/ITS or email helpdesk@lowell.k12.ma.us and I will set up a tutoring session with you.Week at a glance!
