Mark your calendars and join us on Thursday June 7th from 12:30 – 2:30 at the McKinley Middle School Auditorium for Courageous Conversation with Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr.
Impact & Book-Signing Event: The Guide For White Women Who Teach Black Boys
Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., the lead editor, delivers an impact exercise and facilitates a panel discussion with contributors about The Guide for White Women who Teach Black Boys
Purpose:
The majority of public elementary and secondary school teachers in the U.S., Canada, and England are White women while the student of color populations in those three nations are increasing. Indeed, the student of color population is predicted to soon outnumber White students in the U.S. The research suggests that many teachers are unprepared, unskilled and in many ways unfamiliar with the cultural, social emotional needs of Black boys.
The Guide for White Women who Teach Black Boys was designed to be a lasting resource and guide (google) for all readers. It’s not just for K-12 educators. There was a conscious effort to create this book absent of the deficit model and to focus on what White Women teachers (and Black Boys) can do rather than what they are not doing. The chapters were written from multiple perspectives by a diverse group of people. The book wants to challenge readers to recognize and address the real issues that must be addressed head on no matter how difficult they are. Each chapter includes an exercise that can be completed by one teacher, or groups, or can be implemented program-wide.
The Book Talk Panel includes the lead editor of the book, Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr.
It takes the whole community to support our work to ensure all children become positive and productive members of our future. We hope you can join us for all or part of the conversation. Please feel free to bring anyone who may have an interest in engaging in courageous and positive conversation around culture and climate in our community. Incoming 6th grade McKinley Families
We are excited for your child to attend McKinley Middle School. As part of the introduction to middle school we offer a free program, led by current McKinley staff, geared to help your child transition to middle school.
The McKinley 6th Grade Academy is a chance for your child to make new friends, become familiar with the building, practice locker combinations, get organized for school, set goals, and much more! Students who have attended the Academy over the last few years have greater academic success, fewer office referrals and fewer absences than those who did not attend.
McKinley’s 6th Grade Academy will be held Wednesday, August 1st and Thursday, August 2nd. The program will meet from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. You and your student(s) can decide which session your child would like to attend. Each day, students should report to the McKinley Street entrance, by the tennis courts, by 8:00 a.m./12:00 p.m. Parents picking up students should do so at the McKinley Street entrance at 11:00 a.m./3:00 p.m. Again there will be no cost for this experience, but transportation to and from McKinley needs to be arranged by the parent/guardian.
Please contact McKinley office at (319) 558-2348 for a registration/emergency contact form and return it to McKinley by Monday, July 23rd. We are very excited to have your student at McKinley and are hopeful they will be able to attend this summer opportunity.
