Wisdom from the Queen Bee - Mrs. Hall
With the end of the year approaching, classroom schedules are becoming very busy. Many of the classrooms have field trips scheduled. Be alert to information from your student's teacher through Class Dojo, information in their school folder, and school emails. You will want your child to be prepared for any activities coming up to celebrate the end of the year.
Teacher Appreciation Week is next week. Let's celebrate our AWESOME teachers with some spirit day fun!

How can you help your child be ready for the changes ahead? If you have a child going to Nicholson, anticipating summer and then a new teacher here at Hose, or preparing to start kindergarten here in the fall, there are things you can do to help them adjust well. Every child is different and will have their own thoughts and feelings about changes. Even if they view it as positive change, it can still be stressful. Here are some tips to help your child adjust:
- Make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep. This time of year lends itself to nice weather and staying up later, but a tired child won't be able to cope as well as a rested one.
- Make a calendar to help them see when changes will happen. The concept of time is hard at this age, so being able to count the boxes until summer or cross of days until school starts helps them understand when things will happen.
- Give them some control over small choices to help them not be overwhelmed by the big changes. For example, picking out a new backpack within your price range as you prepare for school to start in the fall might be one thing they can have control of. Picking between going to the park or going to get ice cream to celebrate summer break may help them feel they have some control, even if they are sad to leave friends and teachers.
- Read stories that model positive experiences of school. Ask your child questions about what they are looking forward to. Reading a book can help kids have words for their feelings.
- Help them build connections. Drive by the new school building, stop over the summer and play on the playground, or talk with a child you know who has been to that school before. Talk through their plan for summer - are they going to a sitter, a summer camp, etc. How can you help them connect to what is happening next so that it is not so unknown?
Your love and leadership can help an anxious or excited (or both!) student navigate changes well.
