All UAA students will receive a request from UAA, via email, to complete an online IDEA course evaluation during finals week in December. The IDEA survey is the perfect way to articulate positive and negative feedback about your experiences in your courses this fall. The survey is completely anonymous and a great opportunity to promote the classes you enjoyed and share insight on any barriers/challenges you faced in achieving success in a course. Your feedback influences decisions made at UAA!
Please take the time to complete the survey!
AMCS Families are THE BEST!!
Thank you so much for answering the call for parent/guardian volunteers during our Finals Week Encouragement event! Our young Seawolves are going to feel so loved and ready to face their Finals challenge (without those distracting rumblys in their tumblys) - thanks to your help and involvement!
If you missed it last time, here's the scoop:
We're asking for your help with getting our brilliant young Seawolves through a tough time - FINALS WEEK (Dec. 9 - Dec. 13)! Finals make for long days for students and we're pretty sure that SNACKS!, along with a healthy dose of encouraging words & smiles, will help our students push through this stressful week.
Each day of the week is themed:
- 12/09 - Donut Stress - Do your Best! (Doughnuts)
- 12/10 - It's CRUNCH time! You've got this! (Crunchy food)
- 12/11 - You're one smart cookie! Remember what you've studied! (Cookies!)
- 12/12 - Orange you glad finals are almost over? Keep up the hard work! (Orange foods)
- 12/13 - Holiday Celebration! (Your favorite Holiday treat/snack)
We're asking that parents/guardians volunteer to donate a dish/snack to support this effort. If you want to help make it all happen, please sign-up here for one day...OR all of the days! Grub can be dropped off @ the AMCS main office (ADM 103Q) between 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. each day.

A Word From Dr. Kern McGinley, AMCS Principal
Students taking high school courses will follow the ASD exam schedule. High school class finals will take place on December 18th and 19th. The AMCS high school teachers will inform students what day and time their course final will be given. Finals will not be given prior to December 18th and 19th. If you are going to miss the final due to travel, a pre-arranged absence form must be completed by a parent/guardian and submitted to the school for the principal’s approval. Students who miss their high school class final and have been approved through the pre-arranged absence process will have the opportunity to make-up the final in January when students return from winter break.

Single Course Enrollment:
Students wanting to take a class at their affiliate high school second semester will need to complete the Part Time Enrollment form. Please review the AMCS Single Course Enrollment Guidelines as well. All students taking a class at an affiliate high school next semester need to complete this form, even if they are taking a class there this semester. Once the form is completed and has Ms. Rawlings's signature, it can be submitted to the affiliate high school for approval and scheduling. Click here for the Part Time Enrollment form and Guidelines.
UAA Learning Commons:
AMCS students have an array of academic support available to them. In addition to AMCS seeing high school advisory teachers and getting professor assistance during office hours, students are encouraged to visit the UAA Learning Commons. From the Learning Commons website, "The Learning Commons offers learning support resources for all UAA students and the community. Individuals and groups can study, access open computer labs, collaborate on projects, hold meetings in small-group study areas, or get extra help for classes. The Academic Coaching Center helps students develop effective academic skills and contributes to student success. The Communication Center supports student public speaking activities across all disciplines and for all levels. The Math Lab helps students build their math and reasoning skills at all levels. Science tutoring is offered for a few specific courses each semester. The Writing Center offers English language writing and disciplinary literacy, and the Center for Language Learning offers tutoring for students enrolled in languages classes."
Scholarship Spotlight:
Joan Katkus Memorial Scholarship - The VFW Auxiliary Department of Alaska is proud to offer the Joan Katkus Memorial Scholarship to a child of a veteran who is committed to higher education and has a financial need. No minimum GPA required. Application deadline 2/15/20. Click here for the scholarship application.
Graduation:
Graduation will be here before you know it! It's time to start thinking about ordering caps and gowns. AMCS seniors have the choice to participate in AMCS's graduation ceremony, their affiliate school ceremony, or both ceremonies. Our graduation will be held Friday, May 15th at 7pm at the Sullivan Arena. If students are planning to participate in more than one ceremony, they will need to make sure they have the correct regalia/colors for the ceremonies they participate in.
AMCS uses black caps/gowns, gold stoles, and a green/gold tassel. To order AMCS graduation caps/gowns/stoles/tassels, please go to the following link. A standard cap/gown package costs $51. Click here to order! Place your order by January 4, 2020 to get the early order discount (free shipping to AMCS & 10% off shirts/keychains/etc). After that time, student families will have to pay shipping to their own homes.

Strategic Planning Community Forums and Survey
The Anchorage School Board invites anyone with a stake in the educational success of our children to participate in one of four community forums about the future goals and direction of the Anchorage School District.
Community involvement and feedback in the School Board's strategic planning process will contribute to a new set of District-wide goals to be introduced next fall.
Please join us and encourage your community to participate in this community-wide process focused on educating all students for success in life.
You may also provide input via our community-wide survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/KYRJY56.
The survey will be available to the public from Nov. 4 through Nov. 27.
