Parent Updates
- We are excited about our upcoming Journey To Success event on March 2. We hope that you will join us and consider participating in this years Global Learning Adventure! Your child brought home a packet of information regarding this event in their Friday Folder this week. Please make sure to review that. All students are to work at home to decorate a paper doll reflective of their cultural heritage and return that to their teacher no later than February 24. We also encourage you to consider hosting a table and/or bringing a food item reflective of your families heritage to our event. All of this information is available in the packet.
- If you and your family are musically inclined and would like to perform a cultural song or dance at the event please fill out the form linked here.
- Do you need to register a child to attend Evergreen Mill next year? For all kindergarten registrations and to register any new student to attend Evergreen Mill for the 2023-24 school year you must schedule a registration appointment with our Registrar, Mrs. Peggy Eder. You may do so using the link posted here or see below.
LET'S TALK HOMEWORK!
I would like to provide parents with a review and update of the Evergreen Mill Homework policy and guidelines as we have now begun the second semester of the 2022-23 school year. It is important for parents to understand that our students work exceptionally hard during the school day with their teachers and that homework should not be an unnecessary burden to children/parents after school hours. It is also important for parents to understand that years of research, most predominantly by researcher and Professor Dr. John Hattie, upon whose work the LCPS Collaborative Learning Team and Personalized Learning models are built, shows that homework has no significant effect on student learning at the primary/elementary school levels. You will find an interesting article about Dr. Hattie’s research here for those interested in learning more. We provide opportunities for homework in an effort to encourage a love of reading and to build responsibility in our students in preparation for middle and high school. Below are the homework guidelines for Evergreen Mill.
Students are to read for a minimum of 20 minutes per night at home either independently or with a parent. (You may extend this to 30 minutes in grades 3-5).
Students in grades K-2 may complete a RAH log or reading calendar that parents sign, but this is not required.
Students in grades 3-5 must complete a RAH log or reading reflection Monday-Thursday.
Students are to have the opportunity to review/practice math skills being taught in the classroom via Dreambox, IXL, a paper pencil activity, or a math game. Our recommendation is that students use Dreambox or IXL for 20 minutes at least 3X per week at home.
Teachers have the discretion to assign additional math practice activities for homework.
Study guides should be provided in advance of summative assessments to support students in preparing for these assessments.
Teachers have the discretion to assign other review assignments related to the core curriculum as deemed appropriate. This is not required.
Parents may request additional review activities for their child(ren) from the teacher and teacher's will work to provide additional activities in a reasonable manner.
