A novel in verse is a novel-length book told in poetry rather than prose. This form of story-telling has become increasingly popular over the last five to ten years and is a great way to discuss poetry in the classroom. Scope a few out at our Novel in Verse display and see what all the fuss is about!

Win Steve Jenkins' The Beetle Book!
Steve Jenkins has written and illustrated over thirty picture books for young readers. He uses a cut paper collage style for his illustrations and works with his collaborator and wife Robin Page frequently. He has stated that his books are always inspired by children’s questions, especially those from his own children. He is a lover of creatures and reading and has brought his two interests together over the years in the form of his many books.
The Beetle Book is about all of the different kinds of beetles. After an overview of body structure, sections are devoted to topics such as beetles’ senses, behaviors, life cycles, communications, and defenses. The illustrations will definitely appeal to younger kids, but this book will be great for older kids who are doing reports or who just love bugs!
Look for other Steve Jenkins books in the Youth Collection. In the meantime, sign up to win a free copy of The Beetle Book. The drawing will take place on December 7th, 2012.

What You Did In the Youth Collection . . .
One of the assignments for the course included the Contemporary American Indian Voices project. Using VoiceThreads, students discussed contemporary American Indians who are leaders in literature, sports, television/movies, science, art, politics, and many more areas. The project was then shared as a teaching resource for a 5th grade class in Iowa's CAL district. Follow the link to check them out!
