In Appreciation
This past week we had the opportunity to meet (via Zoom) so many of our families during conferences. Your questions, comments, and collaboration with us are invaluable and help us all make the best of a less than ideal situation. I heard from a number of families confirming what we know about our teachers at Hedden, that they are working hard to connect with kids and engaging them in learning and conversations even in this remote setting. I thank you for your emails and messages of affirmation and confirmation of our staff!
At the same time, as a collective of educators, we need to let you know how much we appreciate you and the effort, time, and energy you are putting in to make this work so well. As a group of parents and family members (siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) you have done so much to ensure our students have the settings, supports, and materials to be successful with online learning.
Over the summer we read a book, The Distance Learning Playbook, which included this quote, "You can choose to think of this as a wonderful learning opportunity or a royal pain. The task is the same, but how you view it can influence your efforts, the stress you experience, and the satisfaction you receive." While I know, both as a parent and educator, that online learning can present us with plenty of challenges, our ability to move past that and find the opportunity is vital for our students. Your choice to make the best of this and to help students see this as a new learning opportunity really makes a difference in their effort and engagement. Thank you for this.
If you find that you or your students needs something, whether its some technical support, materials, or someone to talk with please reach out. We'll do what we can to help.
Take care,
Don Sims
Hedden Elementary Principal

Securly Web Filtering
All of our district student Chromebooks have a filter running at all times. The name of this filter is Securly. This is the same system that our secondary families have had access to. Now that students are using their Chromebooks at home, we wanted to extend this to our elementary students and families as well.
Soon, you, as a guardian, will start to receive weekly emails summarizing your student's browsing activity. From those emails, you will also be given instructions on how to create a Securly account in order to review more details and review more frequently than the weekly email. Keep an eye out for a welcome email from Securly coming soon.
