Beginning next week, I will be visiting each of our classrooms to share some educational neuroscience with students! Students will have the opportunity to learn about our prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala regions of our amazing brain and their functions. In exploring these 3 major brain areas, we will specifically make the connection and role they play with our emotions, thoughts, and actions (behavior).
This lesson correlates with two competencies identified for Indiana’s Social-emotional Learning: insight (self-awareness) and regulation (self-management). Insight is the ability to know your emotions and how they affect your thoughts and actions. Gaining insight is an important skill for building self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy for others. Insight helps students recognize their own strengths and areas of growth. Regulation is the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions. Regulation skills build positive self-control, positive self-discipline, and impulse control. I am excited to share this lesson with our students. As always, I am here to support our students and families any way that I can. Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend enjoying time with family!

Hello, Winfield families!
As we further explore various facets of empathy in our Second Steps lessons, I chose to focus on the significance of caring and helping this week. Our students have already learned about compassion, and they have practiced what compassion looks like, so I felt it would be beneficial to teach what caring and helping contributes to empathy and compassion. All people, no matter the age, demonstrate acts of caring and helping every day, and as my discussions with your students unfolded, we all learned of the many, many ways young children regularly show care for others.
Empathy can motivate students to respond to others in a caring way. Young students often try to comfort others through physical affection, by offering a toy, or by saying something comforting. However, students may have trouble showing care and concern in emotionally overwhelming situations. As we wrap up Unit 2 and move on to Unit 3 next week, students will learn emotion-management skills to help further their ability to offer effective support.
During our lesson, students listened to a story about puppy and snail, and how snail showed care and compassion by listening to puppy and then by helping puppy with his problem. They then practiced several ways to care for other people based on the scenario I provided. Students were thoughtful, kind, and compassionate in their responses, therefore showing me that they are really grasping these topics and putting them to action.
Being able to show the ability to care for others helps children get along with others. Go ahead and ask your child what showing care or compassion means (saying something kind or doing something to help) or ask them when they feel is a good time to show care for someone else (when someone is feeling sad, lonely, or frustrated). I was amazed at the level of maturity from our students when I heard from numerous children how they would handle another child being left out of a game or conversation. Without missing a beat, every student responded that they would ask the child to join them because that is the kind and loving thing to do. To hear these students and their intentions to maintain peace and love amongst one another is a true testament to the truths they are living each day. It was a fantastic week in PBIS land!

I have received a few questions about students quarantining due to close contact exposure to COVID-19. If your child is excluded from school due to being a close contact to a COVID positive person (less than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) they should stay at home during the 14 day quarantine period. They should not participate in activities outside of the household or play or have contact with others not living in their home.
During a 14 day quarantine for close contact :
-Stay home for 14 days. Do not participate in activities outside the household or with people not living with you.
-Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, nasal congestion, headache, diarrhea. If symptoms appear COVID testing is recommended.
-Stay away from high risk family members living in your household.
If your child experiences COVID-related symptoms at home please keep them home. Any fever, cough/ respiratory symptoms need to be evaluated by a doctor and a doctor’s note to return to school is needed before sending your child back to school. If anyone in your immediate household is ill and being tested for COVID-19 please do not send other siblings to school until test results are obtained.
Our Winfield parents have been doing a fabulous job helping us keep our students and staff safe by closely monitoring their children and following illness, isolation and quarantine guidelines! Thank you!
