From the 7YOC:
During these past 2 units, the 7YOs have been having a wonderful time in Cultural Studies. During our first unit, the students learned how to read and make a map, and learn about different habitats and landforms on the earth. Along with creating their own treasure map, students created a model of the earth with a key and compass and labeled the earth with landforms and habitats. Then in our second unit, we focused on natural and human-made resources. This created a very engaging discussion on how to protect the earth. To represent the students' ideas on how to protect the earth, we created a bullelltin board called, "What will your Carbon Footprint Be?"
As you can see, the students had a wonderful time during the Harvest Festival!
Teacher Professional Development
On November 10-12, BIS teachers will have 3 days of profesisonal development. One day will be devoted to updated first aid and CPR training and certification. Two days will be focused on 21st Century Skills and the 4Cs, which are part of QSI's new accrediation objectives. The 4Cs are communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Teachers will be learning about how to incorporate the 4C's into their lessons. Additionally, teachers will have a chance to attend a workshop about MAP testing and how to use the results to drive instruction.
Most of the PD this year will be virtual, with other QSI schools in the region. However, there will also be time for collaboration with colleagues here on campus.

Vision Screening
During the month of November, our school health program will provide vision screening for our students. School vision screenings are important and can help detect vision problems that commonly occur in school-age children. Vision problems have been shown to negatively affect a child’s achievement in school. Some children may have trouble reading whiteboard notes or other classroom presentation materials. Other children will have trouble reading or doing any kind of close work. In addition, several types of eye disorders can lead to permanent visual impairment if not identified and treated early by a doctor.
The children in 5 YOC through SEC 4 will participate in vision screening this year. The screening will only include a distance and color vision test in which students stand a certain distance from a chart and read the letters or symbols. It is a very simple, yet effective way to determine whether a child may have vision impairment. If your child wears glasses we will perform the screening with glasses on to evaluate whether the prescription is appropriate. You will only receive results of the screening if the results point to vision impairment. In this case, we will send home a note suggesting a visit to an eye doctor, who can perform more definitive tests and prescribe corrective lenses if needed.
If you have any questions about the screening process or prefer that your child does not get screened, notify our school nurse, Sevda.
COVID Update
We ask you to please continue to monitor your children 's health carefully and check with our school nurse, Sevda, if your child is sick or has any COVID symptoms.
Thank you to parents who have contacted us when there is a positive covid case in the household. Together we can keep our community healthy and our school open.
