Words from the Woods

January 2019

Happy New Year!

Our students are happy to be back at school! That is a great way to come back from a break!

Work is already in full swing.

Mid-T2 progress will be updated in Power School on January 24.

MLK Jr. Education Celebration

Students will take part in a day of speakers and discussion on civil rights issues, culminating in a community art project based on the Unity Project.

No school on Monday, Jan. 21. in observance of the holiday.

Enrichments are Coming!

The Enrichments program offers new, fun, challenging, or interesting options for middle and high school students to engage and learn together. Picks include Ultimate Frisbee, Foreign Cinema, 2v2 basketball and more--there's something for everyone.

Enrichments start Feb. 1 and meet after lunch on Fridays until spring break.

Signups start Jan. 22.

Basketball parent volunteers needed

We are looking for volunteers to oversee a study hall at school for players between 3:30 and the beginning of practice. Please contact Dena Floyd at dfloyd@woodscharter.net if you're willing to help organize or provide supervision. Many hands make light work!

Health guidelines

Please note that best health practices are to keep students home when sick.

Students should stay home from school for 24 hours after having a fever, and 48 hours after vomiting. We encourage resting for recovery!

Absences due to illness are excused; please send an explanatory note to the advisor within three days.

Students have three school days extension on missed work.

Resources for parenting

Making Caring Common , a project at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, has lots of thoughtful, helpful resources on parenting and educating our children.

Two of the topics I've been reading on lately are College admissions and Caring, Empathy, and Concern for the Common Good.

I also like A Parent's Resource Guide to Social and Emotional Learning from Edutopia.

You may find them interesting--thought I'd share.
