News You Need to Know about JHS!--January 2024
Happy New Year!
Welcome to 2024 Jimtown families! We have a lot going on as we turn the calendar. First and foremost, we bring our first semester to a close. We have final exams on the 11th and 12th. As a reminder, the final semester grade is the one that goes on the transcript and counts toward a student's overall GPA. It's important to finish the term on a high note--study for those exams!
Of course the end of the first semester means the 2nd semester will begin on the 16th. The last half of the school year will go by quickly. We will also start planning for end of year activities, scheduling for next school year, and all the other things that go on in the spring. It is going to go fast, so hang on and enjoy the ride. I want to remind seniors to finish strong. We have seen seniors miss graduation because of a lousy 8th semester--don't be that person. If you have questions about what you still need to graduate, reach out.
As we all know, the weather around here this time of year can be varied, unpredictable, and troublesome. Keep eyes and ears out regarding school delays and disruptions. The district will send messaging as well as post updates on social media.
Looking forward to a smooth and successful 2nd semester.

Congratulations to our Employee of the Month--January
Thank you and congratulations Mrs. Newland!
Final Exam Schedule
Final exams are on Thursday, January 11 and Friday January 12. On Thursday, students will take exams for periods 1, 2, 3, and 4. Friday will be exams for periods 5, 6, and 7. Each class will have extended time to complete the exams.
Since the Career Center has started their 2nd semester, students are expected to be at their programs when not taking finals. For example, students who have AM Career Center will be at JHS all day Thursday taking final exams. On Friday, they will attend their Career Center program. PM Career Center students will flip and attend EACC on Thursday while testing at JHS on Friday.
End of Semester--January 12
The first semester will end on January 12. The second semester will begin on Tuesday, January 16th. As a reminder, each grading period of the semester counts as 40% or the overall semester grade, while the final exam is worth 20%. This final semester grade is the one that determines if a student earned their credit, is placed on the transcript, and is calculated for the student's overall GPA.
Good Luck on Final Exams!!
Attention Seniors and Families: JHS To Host FAFSA Night
According to Indiana Law, ALL seniors in the class of 2024 need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or complete an opt out form. JHS, along with representatives from Bethel University, will host a FAFSA Night on January 24, 2024, at 6:00 pm in the Library. Take advantage of this opportunity for help as students and families navigate the application.
If families wish to opt out, a completed opt out form must be returned to the high school office.
Congratulations to Health Science II
For the 4th year in a row, every Health Science II Capstone student passed the exam and earned a Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant certification. Their next step in their HSE experience is to start clinical rotations the second semester at Elkhart General Hospital.
These students will also be recognized at a Pinning Ceremony on January 10th.
Congratulations to Alyssa Aldridge, Alexa Alvey, Brylee Beck, Liberty Dover, Leyanah Gillespie, Alexandra Gladieux, Gabriel Glass, Gabriella Gwinn, Molly Mikel, and Fancy Quick!
Life Skills Students Stay Busy in December
Students in the Life Skills program were busy with a variety of activities last month. They helped set up and decorate tables at Jimtown Elementary for the holidays, washed and hung all the band uniforms for the end of the season, and assisted with the Food Drive!
Mrs. Quintana's and Mrs. Reppert's classes also combined to do a collaborative lesson to learn about the story of the Poinsettia and Mexican culture around the holidays.
Book Club News!
Preschool Story Time
The students have really enjoyed having the preschool class meet with us every other week so far this year. The group is looking forward to this semester. The Story Time Club will meet on January 19th during Homeroom.
Here's looking forward to another successful semester!
Fellowship of Christian Students Update
The Library is a Happening Place!
Student and staff use of the library has really grown in the last year. We appreciate the teachers who are brining their classes down to learn about research and select independent reading materials. We also appreciate Mrs. Adcock for making the library an inviting environment where students can engage in activities and clubs. Most importantly, the items on the shelves are being used. In 2022, the library circulated 581 items. As we closed out 2023, the library circulated 2,042 items!

Schedule Changes for the 2nd Semester
Schedule changes will ONLY occur in the first 5 days of the new semester. To request a schedule change, students must pick up the change request form in the main office. The form should be filled out, signed by a parent, and returned to the main office. Mrs. Yoder will review the requests as they come in. Forms will be available starting on Tuesday, January 16th and returned by Friday, January 19th so all changes can be finalized that following Monday.
Schedule changes are made on a priority basis to fill holes in schedules, to add a class that needs to be retaken, or to level class sizes. Requests asking to change lunch periods or to move to a class to be with friends will NOT be honored. Students CANNOT request to opt out of a class to take Apex. Apex courses are reserved for students who need to recover credits and are placed for specific reasons.
Scheduling for the 2023 - 2024 School Year
Mrs. Yoder has started the process of scheduling for the next school year. Students, it is important that you consider your course selections carefully so you have the opportunity to meet all your graduation requirements.
On January 25th during homeroom, Sophomores will attend an informational meeting about programs at the Elkhart Area Career Center (EACC). JHS Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply to one of the many programs at the EACC and if accepted, attend a program for half a day. These programs are a great way to ensure students meet all graduation requirements.

Applications for Indiana Teaching Scholarships are Open
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education is currently accepting applications for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, which provides up to $40,000 of financial aid to aspiring teachers.
High-achieving high school and college students who plan to teach in Indiana for at least five years can receive up to $10,000 per year of college (up to $40,000 total) from the scholarship. Students must apply by January 31, 2024, at ScholarTrack.IN.gov.
To expand upon the number of recipients of this scholarship and encourage the educator workforce to be reflective of student demographics, Indiana lawmakers established the Next Generation Hoosier Minority Educators Scholarship during the 2023 legislative session. The award provides Black and Hispanic or Latino recipients with up to $10,000 per year of college and shares the same requirements as the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship. The application is built within the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship application.
To qualify for either scholarship, students must meet one of the following academic requirements:
- Rank in the top 20% of their high school graduating class OR
- Have a top 20th percentile score on the ACT (25) or SAT (1190) OR
- Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Congratulations to Justyce Williams!
Jimtown girls’ basketball has not had a 1,000 point scorer since Katie Goward in 2011. That streak ended on January 5th as Justyce Williams hit a shot just a few minutes into the game versus Clay. Justyce not only becomes the first 1,000 point scorer since 2011, but also is the first and only Jimtown player to do this while Jimtown has been a member of the Northern Indiana Conference and the first to do it as a member of Class 3A. Congratulations to Justyce and all players and coaches in the Jimtown girls’ basketball program as we hope to see a lot more from this team in the next month as their season winds to an end.
