Week 3, Term 3 Newsletter
Tēnā koutou katoa! Greetings everyone!
What a week we’ve had with so many exciting activities planned in and out of school! There have been Careers assemblies for Secondary, Cross Country in Kaikohe with Mr Shanks, Performing Arts at school and in Whangarei with Mrs Dallas, Girls basketball in Whangarei with Pika McDonald, Trade construction with Mr Adair, Te Ahu library visits for Primary - and so much more! I am so grateful to the teachers and parents who make these events happen for our tamariki. In every situation, our tamariki carry the light of Jesus everywhere they go - within our school and beyond! This is exactly what we have been called to do - be disciples of Jesus, share His good news and show others what it means to be followers of the Most High God!
Last term the teachers started some professional learning development focused on improving the literacy skills of our tamariki. This is being provided to us by Becca Thomas from Cognition Education. We have had a few sessions with Becca and the rich conversations among the teachers have been incredible. Some teachers will be travelling to Kerikeri after school next Wednesday to listen to educationalist Russell Bishop share his thoughts about “Relationship-based Learning”, a form of culturally-responsive pedagogy that is responsive to and inclusive of all learners, especially those currently marginalised. As teachers and educators, it is important we keep abreast of the changes in education to be able to provide well for our students, your tamariki.
Over the coming weeks, I will be sending out a survey to ‘Gather Whānau Voice’ and hear what your thoughts are about what we can do better to support your child and whānau. Our mission is to partner with whānau, and so this is part of our consultation to find out more information to help us plan ahead. A follow-up whānau korero will be held following this - a date is yet to be set for this.
I don’t know about you, but I am blown away each day by the goodness of God in every situation. Like the Bethel Music song says - His mercy never fails us, we are held in His hand, He is always faithful, He is so so good! Believe it, declare it, decree it - the Goodness of God!
Blessings,
Mrs. Tina Takimoana
Acting Principal
Verse for the week:
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

The Garden Club News - Aug 22
Kia Ora Whanau,
Just an update on what the Primary (mainly) Tamariki have been up to in the gardens lately. The “Lemonade shop” has been in full swing, with fresh lemons on offer from the “staff” who pick, clean, cut and share alongside making the occasional fruit/veg/herbtail. We have planted a new strawberry bed, carrots, kohl rabbi, beetroot as well as trying our hand at raising our own seeds.
Some of the older Tamariki have been on the big tools helping take apart one of the older beds as we are trying to make the garden more functional.
However, WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!! Around the school the little gardeners have been taking responsibility for looking after the fruit trees, and we would like to expand this to behind C block.
To do this we need:
- Biggish logs or Treated boards to make new raised beds
- 10 fence posts to make supports for espaliering trees.
- Old gumboots to use so shoes are not getting too dirty (doesn’t matter if they leak).
- Any spare bits of marine ply to make small sheds for tools and store boots
- If you have any seedlings spare, the workers love to be putting new stuff in.
If you can help, please see Mrs Walker who can usually be found in B3/4 or in the C block garden.
Thank you from all the members of the Garden Club.
School App
If you haven’t already loaded our School App to your phone or mobile device - the instructions of what to do is in the poster provided. The App some very useful features such as notifying student absence, calendar events, notifications and more.
Meet our 2022 KALS Prefects - Ethan Walker Head Boy
Kia Ora,
I am Ethan Walker and I am proudly and ecstatically the Head Boy here at KALS. I have 2 older siblings, 1 brother (Cameron) and 1 sister (Julia) who both came to KALS.
I work part time at The Warehouse 5 days a week on top of my schooling here. I enjoy a bit of the outdoors and moving + feeding the cows on our 135 acre property at Lake Ngatu. I have done calf rearing the last two years which I've also enjoyed.
I plan to head off to University at Waikato to study a Bachelor of Business degree next year, majoring in Strategic Management.
The scriptures that have stood out and stood by me the last few years has been Matthew 5:14+16 - “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden... In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" also Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Thanks - Ethan
