Pier 24 News
Dear UMAC Parents,
Next week our team will take their final MAP reading and math test of the school year. After testing each student will conference with me to review both scores and review set goals for the year. I am confident that we will have much to celebrate during these final MAP conferences. Our class will be taking the math MAP test first thing on Monday morning so please be sure your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a hearty breakfast to ensure they are energized and ready to show what they know! Tuesday morning we will finish with the MAP reading test. Thanks so much for your continued support as we finish up our spring testing. Lastly, you will receive a copy of your child’s MAP scores, as well as goal sheets at the end of the school year.
Shared Reading
Students read the historical fiction story, The Hatmaker’s Sign. Benjamin Franklin relayed "to heal the hurt pride" of Thomas Jefferson, whose draft of the Declaration of Independence was being picked apart by the quibbling Continental Congress. In this tale within a tale, a hatmaker drafts copy for a sign for his shop. On his way to the sign maker, he encounters a string of opinionated people who offer suggestions until the sign is literally- nothing! Students were asked to answer the following essential question: What lesson does Benjamin Franklin teach Thomas Jefferson when he shares the story of the hatmaker’s sign?
Math
Old Friends: This week our old friends learned two new formulas to find the circumference and area of circles. Ask your child about the relationship between diameter and the circumference of a circle! Unit 10 assessments will come home on Monday for your review.
New Friends: This week new friends did a hands-on graphing activity. Our project included collecting, analyzing, interpreting data, and probability. We learned that graphs are not only valuable instruments for communicating data, they can also be tools for stimulating discussion in promoting mathematical thinking.
