What a huge week we have recently had here at Hawera Intermediate.
Incredibly successful Marae and Mounga Trips have been held. Thank you to all whanau and supporters who made these trips possible. Our students had a fabulous time and a special thank you is extended to the Rangers who shared their passion of the Mountain with us!
To our teachers thank you for the huge amount of work you have all put in behind the scenes to ensure that our visits were enjoyable, educational and safe.
To add to our fantastic week we welcomed back the "Champions" of the Inter Intermediate Rugby Rippa Tournament on Thursday. 30 students from our school represented Hawera Intermediate and our Year 8 Boys team took out the top spot! Well done to you all.
We also recently enjoyed an exchange with Francis Douglas Memorial College . Whilst not having a win our students played with real heart and made us proud.
Unfortunately our exchange with Devon Intermediate was cancelled last Friday - critical staffing levels and student illness at their school determined this call.
This week we announce the resignation of Richard Baylis who has won a position at Patea Area School. Richard will take up his position mid Term 3, August 19th being his last date of work here at Hawera Intermediate.
We wish Richard well into the future - Patea Area is certainly gaining a talented teacher to their ranks.
This week Te Paepae O Aotea, Middle Leader positions, have been announced. Congratulations to Dawn Mendes, Kathryn Moss, Erica Stephens, Elizabeth Stewart, Desmond Bain and Emily Davidson. These positions do not begin until Term 4, this allowing the school to maintain as much stability as possible in our teaching force.
Tricky times are ahead as we consider how best to staff the school but please be assured students are always at the heart of the matter and we will work hard for the least disruption possible.
Term 2 holiday break is upon us, this could not have come at a better time, lots of illness is prevalent. Please rest up over the holiday break, chase away those nasty bugs and we look forward to a fun filled last term at Hawera Intermediate beginning on Monday July 25th.

Taranaki Rippa Rugby Tournament
We had three teams representing Hāwera Intermediate at the Taranaki Rippa Rugby Tournament on Thursday 30th June. All three teams played extremely well, with all three making it into the semi-finals.
Our Year 7 boys team won two out of three games in the round robin then lost in the semi-finals against Manukorihi.
Our Year 8 girls team won two games and drew their other before a close loss in the semi-finals.
Our Year 8 boys team won all their games in the round robin, then won their semi-finals against Highlands Intermediate. Playing in the finals against Manukorihi was a very closely fought game with HIS coming away with the win 10-7. Resulting in them winning the boys competition outright.
“I was playing in the Year 8 girls team. We had 4 games and tied one, won two and lost the semis, but it was a very close game we only lost by a couple of points. I had a pretty fun day and we had a great team!” Cove Warburton
“At Rippa we played four games and we won two games and lost two. My favourite part was when I got an interception and scored a try for my team. And my whole team did such a great job.” Vivaan Chand

On Monday the 27th of June, our class made a crockpot hangi. It started off with everyone washing their hands, of course, and then getting into pairs or groups of three to make our hangi. After making our small groups, we got one of the other groups to come and share a chopping board and knife between the four-five of us. We all received a large/medium sized piece of foil to put our ingredients on. We got a piece of cabbage first, then went to grab our pumpkin, carrots, potatoes, and kumara.
We started with peeling the carrots and potatoes, although not many people decided to peel the pumpkins or kumara. When we finished peeling the veggies and we threw the skin away, we chopped up the vegetables and put them on the piece of cabbage, over the top of some stuffing. After we all finished with that, Mrs Stephens gave us some chicken to put on top, then we passed some salt and pepper around to season our food. After seasoning, we wrapped it up in the foil that we received and made a label with our pairs/groups names to put on the crock pot that some of our classmates brought in.
We let it spend around five hours in the crockpot so that the chicken could cook thoroughly, then grabbed it out to eat. The veggies were all delicious, and the chicken was (luckily) fully cooked and delectable.
Overall the experience was fun and the end result was amazing - I think we all enjoyed making and eating our hangi!

Free flu jabs for tamariki aged 3 to 12
Children aged 3 to 12 years old can get a free flu vaccination from their GP, healthcare provider or at most pharmacies from this Friday 1 July.
Free flu jabs for tamariki – Ministry of Health
Most tamariki aged 9 years and over need one vaccination each year to get good protection against flu.
If you have a child under 9 years old, talk to your healthcare provider as they may need one or two vaccinations depending on whether they’ve had a flu vaccine before.
If tamariki have recently had COVID-19 they can have a flu jab as soon as they’ve recovered.
