E. O. Muncie Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
September 2016
August was full of library orientation lessons, Destiny review, Digital Citizenship, new iPads and Chromebooks! September has been just as full of activity in the Learning Commons! We have been busy celebrating International Dot Day, Augmented Reality, Google Classroom, and breaking out the Polar 3D printers! We are also recruiting 5th grade students for Rolling Returns!
We are so excited for the fun year ahead!

Dot Day!
Each year around September 15ish, students all around the world celebrate The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.
E. O. Muncie students watched the digital version of the book. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to "make her mark". What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage.
After watching the video students participated in the following activities:
1. Scan Quiver Art dots
2. Play ShapeQuest on the iPad (augmented reality)
3. Gumdrop Challenge
4. Make their mark on a collaborative piece of art in the Learning Commons.
September is Growth Mindset Month
In the Learning Commons, we have been working very hard with our students on having a Growth Mindset. Last January, Class Dojo partnered with Stanford University's PERTs lab to bring us the Big Ideas videos series. We absolutely LOVE watching those 5 minute videos and are looking forward to the next series.
We hope that by helping students learn about the Fixed vs. Growth Mindset, we can change their perspective to one that believes that hard work, determination, and repeated attempts at learning actually contribute to one's success.

We love STEAM!!
Students at EOM will be putting their problem-solving skills to the test as they design and construct in the Learning Commons.
What does STEAM stand for?
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math
In order for our students to be successful, they will need lots of recycled materials. That's where we need your help. We are asking for donations.
The list below is the "more common" items and are merely suggestions. They are definitely things we would like but please do not limit yourself to only items on this list.
Please send materials to school labeled "STEAM STUFF."
(All items need to be safe, clean, and appropriate for elementary-aged students. Items like hand-tools, sewing needles, etc. will only be used with adult supervision)
- Sewing supplies (needles, thread, fabric)
- Ribbon, yarn, string
- Legos, Knex, Blocks
- All types of paper (wrapping paper, card stock, construction paper, printer paper, scrapbook)

About Us
- Get students excited about the library space and learning.
- Give students opportunities to work on engaging tasks.
- Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically, and creatively.
Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
