Measure, Manage, Reduce, Invest
@ the Local Climate Solutions for Africa Congress, 2013
Global Protocol for Community Emissions (GPC) Stakeholder Workshop
The World Resources Institute (WRI), C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) are jointly developing an international greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting standard for cities, called the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GPC).
The standard provides cutting-edge advice and support to local governments for a transparent, consistent and common approach to emissions measurement. This can enhance access of local governments to global climate funds.
In May 2012, GPC Pilot Version 1.0 was released. Currently, pilot testing is taking place with 35 cities and communities around the world. The full standard will be published in 2014.
To supplement the pilot test, about 10 stakeholder consultation workshops in different regions of the world are taking place, and this is the GPC Africa Workshop Session.
The workshop is of interest to all local governments looking to measure and manage their emissions to improve quality of life and attract funding, as well as experts, organisations and consultancies working in this field.
Some of the cities attending the session include eThekwini Municipality (Durban, South Africa), Nelson Mandela Bay (South Africa), and Lagos (Nigeria)
