Color Run

We are excited for the first annual Color Run this week! It will take place at 1:40 pm at the Kennedy track and field this Friday. If your student wants to participate and has not turned in a permission slip, extras can be found in the office. Students need to return these by Thursday, May 9, at the latest. You can no longer fill out the online permission slip. For more information about the Color Run go to: https://kennedycougarspto.org/kennedy-color-run

You should have received an email with your child’s personalized fundraising link through 99Pledges. Please share that link with friends and family via text, email and social media to ask them to support your child in this event. If you did not receive it, you can visit the main fundraising page and search for your child’s name: https://99pledges.com/fund/JFK.

For every $25 earned in pledges, your child will receive a raffle ticket that s/he can enter into a raffle for a chance to win some great prizes, including:

  • $50 Hillsdale mall gift card

  • Horse trail ride for 4 at Webb Ranch

  • 4 person all day SUP or kayak rental from 101 Surf Sports

Big picture

Vaping/JUUL Education Night

We had a good turnout at the Vaping/JUUL education night and the presentation was excellent. Thank you to all families who attended. I will be getting the presentation from the presenter and will share it with all of you, although there was so much more information to learn that will not be conveyed from just reading the slides and watching the video. I am going to try and bring him back in the fall to present to all of the students, and perhaps we can do another parent education night for those who missed it.

Safe and Smart Choices at Drop Off/Pick Up

A reminder again to make good choices when you drop off your student. Please do not drop your student off on the opposite side of the street because students are walking right in front of cars often without looking and almost getting hit. Please encourage your student to use the crosswalks if you must drop off on the other side of the street. Also, be mindful of using neighbors’ driveways to turn around, and make sure you are not blocking their driveways.

CAASPP Testing

We are in the middle of State testing. Most students are taking their time and trying hard, which we really appreciate. This week the focus is math testing.

Clothing For Hot Weather

It was hot this past two weeks and we started to see some inappropriate clothing such as very short shorts and shirts. We also had a lot of tube tops (that don’t stay up) and spaghetti strap tops. Please help us to make sure your student is dressed appropriately for school.

Graduation

Graduation this year is on Friday, June 7, from 6-7 pm on the Kennedy field. There are no assigned seats, but we put out over 1,000 chairs, which is usually plenty. It is first come first served. Students who are participating in graduation will need to check in at 5 pm to their designated check in area (more details to come). Gates will remain locked until 5 pm so no one can reserve seating ahead of time. As we get closer to this date, I will give out specifics about exactly which gates will and will not be opened at 5 pm since families get very excited about getting to the graduation seating. The blacktop will be open to help with the parking situation.

Students will be loaned a forest green gown for graduation. We will hand that out the week of graduation. (The students were each measured earlier in the year so that we could make sure we had the right gown length for each student). The gown needs to be returned after the ceremony by around 7:30 pm, which is when the graduation party starts in the gym. When students return their gown they will receive their wristband for the party.

A reminder, which we have been communicating since January to parents and students, students must have a cumulative 2.0 gpa to walk through graduation. We held to that last year and plan to do so again. Those in danger of not walking have been meeting with administrators during second and third trimester and are aware of the gpa needed this trimester to achieve the cumulative 2.0.

Summer Music

We are offering some free summer music lessons again this summer for our students. Instead of Saturdays though, Mrs. Federico-Youngs would like to try something different. Please see the attached schedule. If you have any questions, please reach out to her directly.

Chromebook Charging

Please make sure that your student’s Chromebook is charged each night. Students need their Chromebook to complete classwork, and many of the textbooks are digital, so this is how they access them in class. This is really important for State testing since they will use their Chromebook for this each day. I would suggest that you have your student’s charger in your room so that the Chromebook charges all night and your student isn’t on the Chromebook while you are sleeping. I also suggest you do the same thing with your student’s cell phone, if applicable.

Support Kennedy!

Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping the Kennedy PTO raise up to $30K in support of our students and community! This will help fund next school year’s programs, including: The Kennedy Family Center, The Art Program, The Maker Space, and a new project based learning program called Project Lead The Way. Donate Now or put a check in the PTO box in the school office. No contribution is too small!

8th Grade Graduation Festivities

8th grade graduation events are almost here. Your kids will participate in a day trip to Great America, the graduation dance, field day events and the graduation ceremony, including gowns for all kids. These wonderful events take money to produce and we are asking for donations of $75 per child to cover the costs. Without your donation we won’t be able to make all of these events happen. Please make a contribution today so we can make your child’s graduation from Kennedy a memorable one!

  • Make a $75 contribution by credit card or PayPal account using this link: https://bit.ly/2DeBrJf. Please include you child’s name in the comments.

  • Write a check or leave cash in the PTO lock box at the Kennedy Office, please note your child’s name on check or envelope.
