October 2020 Edition

The Month for Masks

WOW! I can hardly believe we are already into October during this most peculiar year. We have successfully completed the first 6 weeks of school. I am SO proud of the students and staff that have created a safe learning environment for ALL. We have made adjustments along the way and everyone is working together to make sure we are secure. Our students continue to use hand sanitizer and wear their masks while social distancing as much as possible. If anyone has had illness, they are collaborating with health officials to get better and return to school as soon as allowed.

The largest part of staying healthy and beating this pandemic is wearing masks. Iowa just released new guidance regarding when to quarantine. (Click here to see the full guidance.)

Basically, it states "For non-healthcare, non-residential settings, quarantine is no longer recommended if a potential exposure occurs while both the infectious individual and the close contacts are wearing face coverings consistently and correctly." We work very hard at GW to remind everyone of the importance to wear their masks and we are proud of our students for helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. Keep wearing those masks!

Autumn has officially begun and the hours of daylight are getting shorter. While the weather has been wonderful so far, soon it will be getting colder. Our school building does not open until 7:50 a.m. so if your student must wait outside, they need to be prepared. Please make sure to send students ready for the ever-changing Iowa weather.

October also brings Parent/Teacher Conference time and we are excited to share your student's progress! Our meetings will look different this year as we are protecting instructional time with our students during the week. Teachers will be setting up meetings with parents from 10:00-2:00 on Monday, October 19 OR 2:00-6:00 on Monday, October 26. These may be face to face or online, whichever your preference. Our hope is to accommodate different schedules and allow our online student's parents to meet with teachers also. If these times do not work for you, please collaborate with your child's teacher. We strive to have 100% participation with our families by the end of October!

Speaking of the end of October...our Halloween parties will be very different this year. Due to exposure, we will not have parents come into the classrooms for parties. Individual teachers may reach out to parents to bring treats and drop off at the school for the party. More details will follow during the month. We appreciate your understanding!

Have a Boooo-tiful October,

Mrs. Davis

Family and friends from around the country will use the student's ID to place their orders and help our school! The items purchased will be shipped directly to the customer.

From the desk of Mr. Coovert

In October students will continue learning about the Second Step program at school. They will be learning about being assertive and respecting similarities and differences. Please check out the parent letter from Second Step to find out more information about the program. It is for grade 4 only, which is being used for both 4th and 5th grades this year due to this program being brand new for both grades.

October is also the time for Red Ribbon week (October 23-31). Please stay tuned for more information about themed days during that time (dress up days). I will be teaching a special lesson on saying no to drugs (assertively) that week for students.

Please help the United Way as they help our community!

United Ways of Iowa is partnering with Strategic Marketing Services and the Institution for Decision Making at the University of Northern Iowa to launch a survey to better understand the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery on individual Iowa households. The findings will help United Ways of Iowa and local United Way organizations better support Iowa families through long-term recovery and beyond.

This survey is to be taken by individuals who are willing to share their household’s experiences in the last six months. Please take the online survey (www.sms.uni.edu/UW2020) and respondents can choose to remain anonymous. We estimate the survey will take 10 minutes or less to complete and participants can enter a drawing to win one of ten $50 gift cards from their choice of HyVee, Fareway, Casey's or Wal-Mart. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
