Each grade level will be discussing calibration of grading using the accompanying rubric for the genre you are currently working with. (These can be found linked here). Lori will also shore up any lingering questions about the units. Literacy coaches will be attending these meetings as well, bringing back any concerns or lingering questions.
Keep copies of the post on-demand prompts they will be assigning (as well as the rubric). We will use these with Lori when she comes to the buildings and do some score calibration and discussion.
For grades 3-5, the time limit set should be for actual writing. The reading of the articles can take place outside of that time.

In case you missed it... UDL Shout Out of Emma Northeim
This week, I am highlighting Muraski kindergarten teacher, Emma Northeim. In only her second year of teaching, Emma has embraced UDL integration with the incorporation of various checkpoints from various guidelines. From flexible seating, to choice on the means to write letters, to brain breaks, and behavior management, her students are very engaged and actively learning. I have to share that they were one of the most welcoming groups as they were helping me to learn the class routines and individually sharing with me what they were learning. If you recall, I highlighted Chapman K teacher, Holly Piorkowski a few weeks back and it is so rewarding to go from one K class to another and the standards students are learning are the same, even from a full day program to a half day. The goal of what students are learning is firm, but the means to get there is flexible, which is one of the driving forces of UDL and personalized learning. Keep up the great learning, Emma!
As we continually look for strategies and try new things or old things we forgot we used to do, here is an article on asking the right questions to encourage personalization and critical thinking. Think about the questions you ask, can you alter them a bit to get students to think deeper?
