HILL HAPPENINGS
#HillHasHeart Edition - March 2022
A Note from the Principal
Hello Hill Families,
I would like to thank my colleague, retired principal, Mr. Harper for filling in for me while I have been out. I had planned on returning on the 14th, but I will be back on the 28th, once we return from intersession break. I appreciate his availability and good work!
Throughout this newsletter there is important information about Schools of Choice, Kindergarten Round Up, March is Reading month, and much more! Please also be on the lookout in your child's communication folder for information about Spring Parent Teacher conferences and hard copies of our March is Reading month calendar!
As we are approaching the eve of intersession, I want to personally wish everyone a restful and relaxing break! I look forward to seeing everyone when we return February 28th!
Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Most Sincerely,
Mrs. Burke
Proud Hill Principal

March Is Reading Month
Counselor's Corner
Psychologist Dacher Keltner has spent years studying the beneficial effects of awe on our mental, physical and emotional well being. Awe: mystery and wonder, it is an emotion or feeling for when we experience something outside of our normal frame of reference. Awe can be experienced in unstructured time. Take a break from the hustle and bustle, highly structured, competition-style of living and allow your child to get bored. But not with video games and technology at the ready! Think: empty cardboard box and markers, or camping in a tent. Well, maybe not literally, it is still winter. Go for a walk. Slow down. Notice what you see, hear, feel. Then reflect on it: talk about it with a friend, draw a picture, write a poem or paragraph about what you noticed. The benefits? Increased positive emotions and less stress (=better health). And experiencing awe can make us kinder, more generous people.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Thompson

Music Notes from Mrs. DuPrey
Our 3rd and 4th grade concert is quickly approaching! We have been working hard in the music room to learn the songs and to bring the best performance we can to the stage. The concert is Tuesday, March 8th, at 7pm. Students will need to arrive no later than 6:40pm. I have asked the kids to wear their Sunday best to the concert. Please contact me if you have any questions about the concert. I am excited to be back on the stage this year at Davison High School.
Looking ahead, our 1st and 2nd grade concert is Monday, May 9th, at 7pm also at Davison High School. Be sure to mark your calendar as I know the spring can be busy with lots of different activities.
Since March is Reading Month in our school, we will be reading some books, and books with songs in music class. Also, I have a few virtual field trips that have been provided to us through The Flint Institute of Music. We will be using our Chromebooks to “attend” these field trips over the next couple of months. I am excited to be able to provide a unique learning experience for our kids this year!

Fitness Fun with Mr. Whitman
During February, students got to participate in Cardio Drumming. For this unit we combine classes with Mrs. DuPrey. The students use yoga balls and drums to dance to the routines we’ve created. We have a lot of fun during this unit, and it’s always a favorite for many.
In addition to cardio drumming, the bowling equipment arrived from one of the other elementaries. The bowling equipment will be here through the middle of March. Students in grades 3-4 will learn how to keep track of score and they will also participate in a mini bowling tournament.
Please remember to send shoes on days that your student has PE!

Library News
The beginning of 2022 has been a busy time in our school library! Our students had an opportunity to make paper snowflakes and turn our reading area into an igloo.
Also our students had an opportunity to spread messages of kindness and positivity by coloring and placing mini paper snowflake notes throughout the library in books. It has been such a joy seeing our students find the messages hidden in the books.
During the coming month of March our library book themes will be: friendship, winter animals, and weather. Third and fourth grade will continue learning the Dewey Decimal non-fiction number system.
March is national reading month and we are excited to remind you of our upcoming Scholastic book fair! The book fair will be held in the Hill Library, March 7-11th. Students will have an opportunity to shop on a scheduled day. Flyers and a schedule will be sent home after our intersession, so keep an eye out for them in your child’s take home folder!
Also, the book fair will be open during parent/teacher conferences, Thursday March 10th 4-7pm. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the book fair!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Jacobs
