Dear Families,

This week I witnessed many acts of kindness throughout our school. Students wrote an Acrostic Poem and notes of kindness to friends, family, and staff. Some students made posters and our 5th graders showed their kindness towards our school by touching up one of our garden areas. Teaching and learning about the various ways they could show kindness was seen from Kindergarten to fifth grade.

Please join the virtual principal's coffee chat on 1/31/21at 8:45. We will spend time looking at our beginning of the year data, Covid updates, and respond to questions you may have.

Finally, I'd like to thank our staff, students, and families for your ongoing patience as we continue to navigate Covid-19 and all that comes with it. I'm looking forward to more sunshine and fewer exposure letters going out to our community hopefully!

Kindness and Empathy

Kindness is the quality of being thoughtful, friendly, generous, and considerate; considering the needs of others.

Empathy is considering how you would feel in someone else's situation; taking time to imagine the feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of another.

Below are two examples of children's literature used to read about kindness and empathy.

San Mateo Ed Foundation Readathon

Ready, set, READ! Today is the day! Details for the kick-off events tonight and tomorrow are available at smfcedfund.org/readathon. Our public librarians and other special guests will read and engage our students as we celebrate our community and the wonderful books available to us! Don’t forget to post your favorite book and check out what your SMFC community loves to read on social media with the hashtag #SMFCReadathon!

Your student can also begin seeking pledges from family and friends to support the Readathon. If you did not receive an email with your child's Readathon page information, please visit our Readathon website smfcedfund.org/readathon for assistance and to check out our other great resources about this year’s event. The top reader and top fundraiser from each school will be invited to a reception with a local author.

As schools read together we hope our broad and diverse community will experience unity and, in the process, raise educational funding for every student in our district. Our goal is to raise an average of $25 per student. Thank you for your support!

Pool Testing

Students who have tested positive for Covid will not participate in pool testing for 3 months. The office will be monitoring students that should not test.

I highly encourage families to have their children participate in pooled testing. This is an effective screening tool to test students.
