"I had been afraid to look at him, but I was relieved to see that his face wasn't burned."
I couldn't believe that everything was burned and he was only relieved about his face! My cousin had had his back burnt and it was really bad, but I didn't care about his arms or anything, I cared about if he was ok. So I could connect with how he must have looked, and how be might have been feeling.
"Two friends of mine had died that night: one a hero, the other a hoodlum."
When I read this I almost started to cry! My best friend from elementary had moved to a whole other state, and it was really hard for me because I would see her probably never again, and I was still able to talk to her on a daily base. I have no idea how I would take it in if I lost one of my best friends, much lest two.
